Since noone talks about them much, you should get the Ratchet and Clank games, which are pretty sweet run-n-gun platforming games that give you enough firepower to level entire armies.

Oh, and Brutal Legend and Costume Quest. They're from Double Fine, and those guys make good games, although Brutal Legend is a bit different than most games, being a heavy-metal-3rd-person-tactics-adventure-game.

Brutal Legend is worth it if it's cheap. It is quite deceptive though, it starts out as this cool, heavy metal Zelda alike but then becomes more about its RTS side. It has multiplayer though, if you're after that.

Look out for LittleBigPlanet 2 coming up soon.
Very fun game, though a LOT of it's charm comes from the building stuff. And playing other people's creations as well.
The story mode should be very solid though.

Check out the first game too. It should be a LOT cheaper now that the sequel is this close to release, especially the Game of the Year version which includes some of the good DLC from the start.

Just going to put some notes up:

FF13 is a decent game, but like Krylo said, rent it first. The beginning often puts people off because of how it introduces things and the driving pace making it feel like there's no good place to stop. On one hand, that "always forward" attitude really brings home that the cast is actually running like that without a break, but on the other, it can really make YOU want one and doesn't give you a good spot to put it down for a while. It's also somewhat frustrating to have things opened up to you bit by bit, because when you first start, you aren't even gaining EXP. You start the game feeling very limited and the pace it unlocks things can leave you feeling restricted for a while. The story can be confusing in that a lot of it happens in flashbacks, which didn't bother me much, but did for many other people. You don't really start knowing what's going on until you play for a few hours, but when you can start fitting it together, it's not a bad one.

And in before anyone comes in with the "all you do is press X" bit, you CAN do that, but it serves you much better not to. The AI simply does not make optimal tactical decisions for you. Okay ones, yes, optimal, no. Sazh's Blitz in particular is a powerful ability against large foes and will do much more damage than any other character is capable of given the same stats, or even higher ones. The AI is also very stupid about using your AoE attacks like Aerora, which can make battles against groups of small enemies a breeze if you manually select it. Also, once you know how the summoning system works, you can do massive amounts of damage, whereas using it "wrong" results in lackluster results.

Demon's Souls is not for everyone. You'll find yourself either appreciating it or snapping your controller in half. It quickly teaches you to be incredibly cautious, because danger lurks literally around every corner, behind most barrels, occasionally out of absolutely nowhere raining instant death from the skies, and, if you're online, in the other players, who can invade your machine with the express purpose of killing you. Yes, you read that last part right. You occasionally see other players as ghosts that you can't interact with. They're playing on their own machine. Under certain game conditions someone can leave their game, invade YOUR game, kill you, and come back to life. You also have to deal with a good many assholes rating you poorly for no reason when you finally unlock the ability to set up the equivalent of a stand to let you join their game as a helper.

You also can't jump or climb, which leads to a good many newbie fall deaths. Only there ARE some things you can climb, which are inserted with little rhyme or reason, so either the devs were incredibly lazy or did it to maliciously fuck with people. Either one is entirely possible with this game.

Basically, another rental before you buy. If your controller, system, TV, and living room window all survive the rental period, THEN consider buying.

Bioshock is nothing short of amazing and will keep you playing for longer than you'd expect. RE5 is good, if a bit short, but you'll probably want to play it with a friend if only because the AI can be a bit sketchy depending on how well you've done on a level before and what difficulty you're on. Prototype and inFamous are both good games in different ways. Prototype is great for combat variety, but the story is lacking, while inFamous leaned a bit too heavily on the Moral Choice button and got it mixed in with your powers, which start to diverge the more (a)moral you get, but the story is just handled better.

Finally, it wouldn't be a PS3 suggestions thread if I didn't champion Folklore, which is the best use of the SixAxis on the market other than Flower (which is $9.99 well-spent on PSN, BTW). Folklore has a pair of parallel stories with both protagonists playing differently, and the story is handled exceptionally given those conditions. It's based entirely on European legends, giving it a rich world, and the game is incredibly atmospheric, colorful, and pretty. The whole thing is a supernatural murder mystery with information coming from decades previous. The voice is well-acted, and even if you can tell the accents are fake, they're good fake accents. Both the leads are immediately interesting and the side characters are surprisingly deep in some cases. Combat involves assigning single attacks to the face buttons and can get repetitive after a while, but it keeps itself involving by integrating motion into it and changes up the motions needed for major encounters throughout the game.

It's definitely worth a rental, and if you decide to buy it, if you can still find it, it'll probably be dirt cheap.

FFXIII would probably be a good game if it was half as long. As it is, it's just a mediocre game, sold primarily on its combat, which is great but for the fact that that's all you do. I was probably overly harsh on it when I reviewed it, but XIII is probably the worst *paced* Final Fantasy I can recall playing, but before anyone argues with that point I want to emphasize the "recall" part of that statement.

Yeah, FF13 is kind of like rolling a ball down a hill. It starts off slow and then finally speeds up after it gets going.

Actually, it suffers pretty much from the biggest thing MOST RPG stories suffer from: not knowing what's going on off the bat. FF13 kind of throws you into the action like half of the genre, only instead of you needing to figure out the situation by exploring the present, the present IS the end result and you find out more about it by being fed bits of the past.

It's also been compared by a friend of mine to a violin. You start off in a very linear path for quite a while, get thrust into a big open area, go back to a skinnier path again, then end in a big area.

Well, aside from the slow start, there's a MAJOR problem in that none of the areas you go to really matter, until halfway through the game, at which point they kind of matter but only to the extent that you get an actual character explaining that you're there to grind, rather than just being there to grind while on your way to actual plot. Then Pulse is a big open world but since the only thing to do from hour one of the game is combat getting hunts to do is a big "Who gives a fuck?" Then the game makes you run around Pulse to trigger cutscenes that have nothing to do with where they take place, even going so far as to make you backtrack for no real reason, all in what must be some weak attempt to justify the big open nature of Pulse. And after all that is the final dungeon that can go fuck itself.

Don't get me wrong, I liked most of the areas from a visual standpoint. They were all very pretty. The gameplay was really good so I enjoyed the fights. I like FFX so I can't really complain about the linear corridor thing. Still, that doesn't change the fact that these fairly enjoyable areas had not a goddamn thing to do with the plot, and were only there so you had something to do while the characters had flashbacks, flashbacks that were only really necessary because the game decides to start you in the middle of the action rather than building towards said action.

But we're derailing the thread, so I think I'll drop it for now unless someone wants to start another FFXIII discussion thread.

I'm not sure if I'd agree with Brutal Legend being worth it, unless it's EXTREMELY cheap.

The heavy metal zeldaish shit is awesome, but the RTS/Brawler hybrid thing they have going on that you can't play like an actual RTS was pretty terribly implemented, and poorly explained. There's none of the actual fun gameplay from the beginning through most of the game other than repetitive side quests that get old quick, and the game is short as fuck. And it's not even like Heavenly Sword 'it's short because that's the story pacing' short. The story feels extremely rushed, with you only meeting each type of enemy once or twice before wiping them out entirely, and it really could have just used more of everything.

More Adventure/Brawler gameplay, more areas, more battles, more character interaction, more units, just more.

But as it was released it feels pretty half-assed with not nearly enough of anything, the RTS combats felt unpolished, the story felt rushed and horrible, and just bluh.

Huge disappointment. If it weren't for Jack Black's VA, the writing, the soundtrack, and the art, the game wouldn't have a leg to stand on. But being pretty and pleasant to listen to isn't enough to hold a game up.

I liked Brutal Legend more than Krylo, but I more or less agree with everything he says about it. About the RTS-ish combat, you will either do it wrong, in which case it will be frustratingly difficult for you (in a bad way), or you will do it right and it will be disappointingly easy for you.
