The relatively recent improvement that made City of Heroes massively more fun to play (for me) than it was before was the flexible difficulty system.
Which makes it possible to have an actual challenge without having to go to stupid lenghts to get it.

Just jumped in to give it a go, but I don't think I get the combat. Is there no way to just hit someone, or do I always have to wait for my powers to cool down?

You have to wait for powers to cool down. It's slow at first, but fairly early on, you start chaining abilities non-stop anyway.

You have to wait, but Brawl should just about cool down between any attack animations. If you want auto-attacks a la World of Warcraft, you can set powers to go off automatically whenever they can, I think by ctrl-clicking them. You see a green ring around them. Also, it's suggested for any character to get the cooldown reducing power from the superspeed pool power set and fill it with cooldown reducing enhancements as fast as possible to get it always-on.
So, what server are we on again? I've got a whole bunch of toons on Defiance which is a European server, so that's right out. Not that I'm sure I can access US servers. Also, as of this writing, my install has failed because apparently my client version doesn't match the current version. You'd think since those MMOs get patched all the time would have patcher programs to get the current client when it finds an old one installed.

Geeze, it's been over half a decade since I last played this. I don't even remember my password... Hm, I'll see about digging it up and joining you guys though.

That bad install wasn't as bad as it seemed. Man, my copy of the game comes on two CDs; it must be ancient.
But anyway, reading up on the free to play caveats, I've got to bitch a bit. Free players are going to be one expansion behind VIPs forever; that's fine. Free players get 0 real-money-store points per months while VIPs get 400; that's stupid. You want free players to have access to the whole game. The difference should be how fast they get it. Give them fifty points, or ten, or one, just never zero. Maybe 400 points isn't useful and you're looking to create three tiers of players - free, subscribers and those who pay extra - but it's still the wrong way to do that. You want people to pay for convenience and comfort, not content. Same thing with those final dungeons only available to VIP customers; free players can get one dungeon per week or month or year, just as long as you give them a chance. This shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Ugh, I started a character on Triumph... but my fears were correct and totally spot on: framerate is a clusterfuck. So I won't be enjoying this game until I get a new machine.
...why has my life gone to hell the last three months? Can't even play awesome games with awesome people from the internet anymore. Unless you count XBL, and I don't even own any Multiplayer games for my Xbox. :/ |
