In general, I think the more of an asshole someone is on the internet the more likely they are to be representing themselves truthfully.

I mean come on, how many of your real life buddies are just totally awesome dudes who always have something nice to say, or how many girls have you dated that were always supportive and agreeable?

Honestly most people on the intarwebs aren't completely representing themselves, they're leaving out vital portions of their personality in an effort to appear more idealized. The danger you run into there is that eventually you reach a point where your internet persona is so far removed from your real life persona that the two would be completely unrecognizable in regards to each other. Once this barrier is encountered you're left with either throwing away any recourse to real life interaction and becoming a soulless internet "face", or dropping the facade and trying to reclaim some of your original personality.

The more integrated your disparate personalities (online and real life) the more likely you are to engender meaningful relationships online. You just have to know when to cut your losses and call out the bullshit.
