it isn't that I'm saying you are wrong, just that it kind of defeats the purpose of making a Dragonball movie if you aren't gonna base it on dragonball. Well besides brand recognition and the fanboys that will watch it simply because its called "dragonball". Oh wait, thats exactly why they are doing it, nevermind

Your view assumes that the Dragonball series would actully translate well into a movie, and they not doing That, and instead making something very very loosly based on it 'defeats the purpose'.

It doesn't translate well to a movie, though. It really can't. I'm not saying there isn't any "Hey, we can make money if we do this" going on, just that they didn't slap the names on actors and make what the hell ever out of it. They took a very basic overview of the Dragonball universe's main conflict (Piccolo D trying to take over) and tweaked it away from being based on the ancient mythology stories that Dragonball was original rooted around and fitted it to appeal to a more modern audience.

It's obvious they went to certain lengths to be as faithful to the characters as would be allowed by the people that tell them what to do, instead of just tossing shit actors into a made-up shit plot that has nothing to do with the show at all and then smearing it with "THIS IS DRAGONBALL YOU MUST WATCH".

There are a few examples of people trying to make accurate Dragonball movies based around the anime. You can find them easily with a little looking, and You'll then wish they were much harder to find.

Well, i'll say this... Justi Chatwin was able to pull off a Teen Goku. He really did. But the movie suffers from Bad Dialogue. Chow fat as Roshi was good too. I Mean, the thing that was bothering me after the movie was how Justin added a "ei" while doing the Kamehame-ha. it was "Kameihameiha" ... but for fuck's sake im just a nerd that way!

yea but then it isn't a dragonball movie then, its just a movie called dragonball. The only motivation to do so is to use the name to increase sales. Would making an accurate adaptation into a live action movie been good? Of course not. But that isn't a reason to change the plot to such a degree its source material is completely butchered. Thats a reason to never make the movie in the first place

Meanwhile in the "Holy crap is that a sequel in the horizon?" front...

Budget estimated at : $100 mil.

Worldwide Box Office results so far: $16.5 Mil

For Comparison: Watchmen Budget : $120 mil / Box Office so far: $147.4 Mil

Personal prediction for a sequel: "Only after it tops $100mil by at least 20%"
Sequel status so far: Snowball's chance in hell

If it doesn't rise too much more, I'm not confident that the throng of people with bad taste here in America can save it.

ops sorry... forgot to let that clear. It's just Asian Markets.

But that's 16 mil out of 2118 screens. So yeah, it opened as #1. And it's not really that bad (the humor is pretty good and the fights are short but actually quite well done) but it needs to do better if it plans to turn in a profit

$50 million for the Chun-li movie, and $100 for Dragonball which probably went most into CGI and Slow Motion stuff... which they used to illustrate goku's Ki reading, but...

There is a lot of Slow Motion stuff....

... like... there is a guy breaking the window of a car door with his fists in slow motion...
