I mean, the simulated 3D portions of early Sonic games where you had to turn balls colors were hard to control and everyone knew it, which is why they were challenge stages. Trying to make an entire game that way and even faster works about as well as veterans of those games would think, only the frustration is all the time and not nearly as rewarding. I'm withholding judgement on the new one because I think they could stumble over the right idea completely by accident using the old formula and have faith that they already have it from the gesture. Also, the 2.5D portions of newer games have been consistently pretty good from what I understand, so they have the base, they have a system that holds them to the base, and they've shown that they understand the market by dropping all of the extended cast that's drawn the ire of mainstream buyers. I'm not saying it couldn't go wrong, but even if it does, it'll at least be a gentler, more understanding wrong than everything that came when Sonic Team got swept up in the mindset that 2D is obsolete with the rest of the market. Now that 3D is reaching its limits, 2D is starting to creep out again as the unexplored territory, and it's hitting the market again just as people our ages are looking back to their childhoods twenty years ago for entertainment.

All I'm going to say is, I recently has the "privilege" of listening to the Sonic 4 soundtrack, and boy was that an epic disappointment.
...One of the best elements in the 2D Sonic games was their soundtracks. If Sonic 4 can't get that much right, I don't hold out much hope that the gameplay mechanics or the level design is going to impress.

Wait, regarding story, I believe I read the opposite. They thought up the game mechanics and then built the story to suit it. All things considered, that sounds like a good approach here, IMO... |

What I read was that was their normal way of doing things, but that they're focusing on story first this time around.

I would play "The Legend of Zelda: Farewell Ruins of the Moon." I would play it hard.
Then again, barring something like Sonic 4's minecart level, I'd play any Zelda game, so...

I don't know much about Sonic 4 but I hope the minecart level(s?) goes away in the final build. Maybe that'll be used for the iPad version, who knows.
I can FEEL the frustration from here. |
