Really? Looking at the MGS2 facial artwork for Snake in my own user profile, I definitely think MGS4's Snake looks similar. Obviously the hair color is unique and the moustache is new, but the facial structure is similar.

And peoples' appearances can actually change more significantly than you'd think as they age. Hell, I saw an image of my father when he was 22 (my age) just a few days ago and I was like, "What the hell? That couldn't possibly be dad."

I'm not even convinced the cardboard box is actually gone, either, though it'd make a much worse hiding place than an oil drum in a battlefield in the middle east. I mean just because there's this new barrel object doesn't mean the cardboard box isn't going to show up. In MGS3 we had all sorts of items included -- even worthless ones -- and I imagine Kojima might even just throw in a cardboard box as a sight gag, not intended to be seriously used to advance in game.
