I'm wondering from a theoretical view point if any humor would have been lost if a small thud sound were added. I know jokes are funniest when they are stumbled upon by the recepient; though, so i'll say brian did it right.

So... It didn't work.

Too bad. But I'm still rooting for a blue magic spell to come out of this (Even though Blue Magic wouldnt exactly work this way... I think you learn robotic weapons as attacks in ff5! And even if it didn't work in FF, that's nothing for Brian to overcome.)

Well, there was a blue magic ability called Explode. Would be fittingly ironic for BM to get an ability that effectively commits suicide as a means of self sacrifice for the party.
