Mass Effect for those of you still not "in the know" or "a decent human being" is the latest mostly linear space opera RPG from Bioware, the company that brought you KotoR, Jade Empire and the Baldur's Gate series. That's pretty impressive I mean they're not everyone's cup of tea but I like them.

It has a pretty in-depth dialog system even if it never really strays from "Yes I will do this task and your smile will be thanks enough." or "Alright I'll do it but you'd better pay me." or "FUCK YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN BUT I'll do it anyway."



We were talking about the Mako and most people hate it. Pro tip: If you hold down the left trigger while in the Mako then click down on the right thumbstick you'll zoom in all sniper-like and pick off the Geth from a billion miles away. But I mean why do that when you can just run them over like a real commando.



Some more Helpful Mako tips:

Right bumber to fire cannon, right trigger to shoot gun, left trigger to zoom.
You can zoom further in with the Mako’s turret by depressing the right stick. This is important as while zoomed you can aim almost anywhere you like rather thank being restricted by the Mako's current angle of elevation.

At higher levels with decent items you'll find you actually do more damage on foot than in the Mako. You also get roughly double the XP for killing things on foot.

Press A to jump to dodge incoming rockets, plasma, and acid spit. Alternatively waddle the mako side to side like a crab so they keep shooting at where you were. Some people find it easier to dodge incoming attacks while zoomed in, just don't try it while being attacked from multiple angles as it obviously restricts your field of view.

The gun knocks a lot of infantry down and is a good option for rocket infantry and others if you need the cannon to take out heavier weapons at the same time.

You can play through as either a Paragon or a Renegade or a mixture of both. Paragon is essentially being a good, by the books cop at the expense of fast answers and flexibility. Renegade is supposed to be the loose cannon who gets the job done and plays by his own rules but really it's mostly an excuse to be a giant dick.

hey I want to clearify something that I was never quite sure of. Enemies are always related to your level. As in, your level determines how strong they are.

While this makes for automatic balance and removes grind. It also means there is basically no reason to earn exp. I could kill pretty much everything, do every side quest, and my foe will still be about as hard to beat.

If I recall correctly, enemy scaling only happens to a limited degree on Hardcore, and almost everywhere on Insanity. Otherwise I think bosses are the only enemies that use level scaling, and even they might not use it on normal.

Theoretically yes, but getting the experience and leveling up unlocks combat abilities such as biotics like Lift and the special weapon-based biotics like Marksman and Carnage. I'm not even sure how often it happens.

However, this might all be conjecture, since one reviewer didn't and he said the game was terrible.

They scale, but only a little.

ALSO: It's much like FFT in that your level isn't the deciding factor--its your skills. So while, ok yeah, if you're fighting a level 60 Saren, he's gonna be stronger than a level 1 Saren.

However, if you're level Sixty you gone done and got yourself some maxed level skills and abilities that will lay waste to Saren, while at level one he'd kick your ass like a little bitch 'cause all you can do is run around and shoot him with your little pea shooters which he's jumping around too goddamn fast to hit with anything because you don't have any goddamn weapon skills that make your targetting reticule smaller or your gun fire faster and and....

Well you get the point.

yea but there is also the point of demished returns. I'm at level 50 and am out of things to put points in. I'm now statting things I dont even freakin use

Even with soldier--Lets see, you want all your combat armor, all your soldier, all your second class, a few points into sniper rifles, at least) (which means a bunch of points into assault rifle) and either assault rifles or shotguns maxed out, preferably one maxed with points in the other, 'cause they're both super awesome.

I mean, I'm jut not seeing where you can ever be like "Shit, there's nothing useful left."

And other classes are even 'worse'. I mean, Adept? ALL the biotic powers are useful, and you can't get enough talent points to max everything. It makes me cry.

I love the game. I've played it like crazy since I got it. There's only one thing that pisses me off about the game: all of the cheap deaths.

See, it wouldn't be that bad if it autosaved more often. But the way it is, it sometimes forces you to restart a level if you screw up. Remember Feros? I do. Got to the 4th level of the underground complex and then died for no reason. Literally, I took a step and "SHEPARD'S BEEN HIT!" *ominous music*

Things like that happened a lot in other places too, but it's not just deaths that force you to reset. I, personally, want to make it through the game without anybody f*cking DYING. So of course, you find out that Saren is trying to make an army of Krogan by curing the genophage, and Wrex hears that you don't want the cure to go through, and Wrex threatens you, and Ashley kills him. I load the last save game... but it turns out to be the beginning of the level again.

....In other news, hurray for Biotics! It's like a HL2 Gravity Gun, but better!
