Discussions about video games frequently end up with the participants extolling the virtues of older games. Specifically, someone will excitedly ask if the other has played a certain game, the person will come back with an excited affirmative, there will be a brief "remember when this happened?" line of questions, and then someone will bring up a different old game.
Maybe I'm the only one this happens to, but I often find myself dead-ended in these sorts of discussions. I'll say something like, "Do you remember River City Ransom?" And the other person will say, "Uh, nope. Do you remember Halo 2?" ...That discussion didn't literally happen -- thank god -- but similair roadblocks pop up all the time. And I talk about video games a lot, since I work in a game store and that's what most folks want to talk about inside. Back in the PSX days, a crazy lady once came in wanting to talk about her alternate personalities, for use in roleplaying chat rooms. I humored her. Another woman once came in to see if we had fishing line, in order to make a scarf look like it was blowing in the wind for a photograph. Oddly enough, we did. Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to list off a couple of games that you recall as being popular, even legendary when you were a kid, but no one else seems to remember playing. The idea is to actually find somebody who remembers the game(s), basically to convince you that you're not utterly alone in your passion for a great game. So. First order of business. Ranger X. An amazing game that everybody in the neighborhood was playing back in the elementary school days -- when we weren't at the arcades, mind you. These days, rather than discussing what our favorite weapons were when I bring up Ranger X, I get blank stares. The funny thing is, whenever I try to explain the game to somebody, somebody else walks in and hears part of the description and says, "Damn, that game sounds AWESOME! Was it for the original Xbox?" Anybody ever play this beast? And feel free to post your forgotten game; I've played a lot of stuff, and I'd be happy to oblige you. Or be stumped.

For me, probably Shining in the Darkness because it took me almost a year to beat that game when I was only in elementary school had difficulty understanding some of the text in the game. This was also back in the day before online strategy guides were available, and I was too young and impatient to bother making detailed maps for every floor of the dungeon in that game so I spent many MANY hours lost and wandering around.
There's always Xenogears, but that's more like people haven't played it rather than people don't remember it.

Oh man, I remember playing RangerX a few times, then getting pissed at it while my cousin took over and beat it for me. I suppose since I was somewhere around....six, eight or whatever, I really liked the motorbike sidekick thing and I asked for one for Christmas.
That's all I can recall....>> Now for my game! The Legend of Dragoon for PSX. Go!

Space Megaforce was my favorite top-down shooter for the SNES. I don't think I've ever met someone who knew about it.

Golden Sun. I mean, with the inclusion in Brawl people will go look at it more, but few people except the ones in the little nieche of people who played it actually even know about it.

I remember back when I was but a wee lad, I'd play Poy Poy for the PS1. The controls weren't too great, and I did get frustrated at times, but man was it fun. I'd sit there and play it for hours, but it was rented, so to my dismay, it had to be returned.
For those that don't know what it is, Poy Poy was a game where you choose a character and there are like three other people (CPU or actual people with the right hardware), and you try to beat the living shit out of each other. The object of the game was to make the enemies' hearts (their life bar, if you will) empty out. This can be done in many ways, but the preferred method (seeing as it caused the most damage) was to pick up random objects based on what stage you were in (rocks, bombs, etc..) and just throwing it anyone within range. Even throwing other characters if the one you chose had the right strength (which were like one or two who couldn't). Fun game, although Poy Poy 2 left me really dissapointed..

Another great game was Uncharted Waters: New Horizons for SNES. I managed to complete 4 of the 6 characters stories. Man I really want to play that again just to finish it....

Oh man I had completely forgotten about Ranger X. Holy crap that game was full of awesome. I have no idea where my copy is anymore though, ah well.
Favorite game I have no one remembers, at least around me? Ogre Battle 64, Persons of Lordly Caliber. Man did I play the crap out of that game. The game always got too hard for me in one or two places when I first rented it, so I never beat it. Thanks to... (I want to say Gurusloth, but damn if I can remember who did it. I still want to have their babies) I got ahold of an actual copy, so I now have an N64 with that game in there ready for me just to randomly go and play it some. |

My contribution: That Tiny Toons Adventures game for the SNES where you have to find Plucky who's making a movie and where the last level is a parody of Star Wars was always great fun and addictive. |
