I've noticed throughout his campaign that he avoided calling McCain's person and character into question and focused on the issues. I'm wondering if this means a new era for politics, assuming his victory? Will we finally see an end to mud-slinging and degradation and a shift to a responsible government that focuses on real issues and policies? Is Obama insincere about this ambition? What is likely to happen to the political landscape, regardless of Obama winning or losing?

Obama is not completely clean of attack ads, as you can tell by turning on the radio every now and then and hearing the repeated "Is McCain REALLY the man you want as president?" dirge, but his more-clean-than-usual style only really works due to his charisma. When you come off as an inherently likeable figure, it becomes easier to play nice, as people buy it a lot more successfully.
Old war veterans can't really pull off the almost naive, charming sincerity campaigning that Obama has, so unless we see another young, spunky, charismatic candidate, I doubt it.

Also Obama is leading so he doesn't really need to drag Mccain down.
US politics has a lot more character attacks in thier campaigns for a simple reason, it works and has worked for a long time. People will continue to use it as long as it continues to work. |

Obama is just as guilty as McCain when it comes to the attack ads. I could swear both claimed to take the high road, but didn't do so.

I haven't actually seen television commercials because I haven't had access to television programming for over two months now, but I have seen some of their ads on youtube. McCain attacks his character, Obama attacks his issues. Obama's run a cleaner campaign by the standard of what the criticism is about compared to McCain, as far as I've seen.
McCain had the robocalling scheme trying to frame Obama as a terrorist with the same logic Palin used. I do think that if McCain wins, it's a statement that mudslinging really does work.
