Oh dear... our very first Doomsday device of 2009.

So, at the bang of 00:00 something may happen or not to all on some Pc's everywhere and even though many experts seem to know a lot about this virus, there are only a handful of generic ways to protect yourself... maybe. Of something... or nothing at all.

Well, i'm intrigued.

Really, i just don't know how serious i should take this...

Frankly, as a programmer, this virus absolutely fascinates me. I was talking shop at school today with one of the other students. I already scanned for it and don't have it, but just reading about how it works, to a guy like me, is like looking into a candy shop window, because in all technicality, I probably know enough to be able to figure out how to write viruses now, although obviously I'm not going to, as it's illegal, and the program I'm enrolled in doesn't exactly emphasize how to do so in the first place, so I wouldn't know how to spread or execute it. But just the ideas behind this are absolutely fascinating.

Given the current evidence, I'm guessing that when it activates a giant pop-up shows up on your screen that says, "April Fools! You fell for it! Nothing bad happened at all!" Then when you try and close it, two more pop-up. The more you close the more appear until your computer crashes and can never be salvaged.

My girlfriend and her family were freaking out about it, and I had to correct several misapprehensions of theirs.

I can completely understand blues' fascination with it. As someone who is fascinated by just about everything that moves, I find the nature of this virus pretty interesting. I particularly like that it doesn't even carry its instructions with itself, so nobody knows what the hell it's going to do.

I'm pretty sure the only thing that is supposed to happen, as stated by a couple different source articles, is the virus will "mutate" (decoded from newspaper sensationalism, "upgrade itself") via some connection to a remote server which will simply make it more difficult to extract from a system. And this really isn't anything new, for the past couple of months the worm has been doing just that. Patching itself as netsec admins find more and more ways of disinfecting it. One paper also said that there isn't even supposed to be any payload executed in the process, meaning all that's going to happen will be an upgrade from Conficker v1.0 to v2.0.

And I also know people who were freaking out about it. Even my mom told me to unplug the modem and router tomorrow.

Honestly worst case senario. everyone infected will have to buy new motherboards/computers. and the end is nigh
best case it slows down your comp or is a April fools.

I can see blues fascination as well (having dabbled in programing myself) but because I act more of a jack of all trades then a specialist the stuff sails over my head although i could see in how it works the pure thought of someone having the time and money to get the servers and stuff right. But my suspicion is aroused by the fact that we didnt hear about it till resonantly being so close to the eve of fools.

still im fairly sure my Zonealarm can handle it.

Funnily enough, the internet connection being severed for the day won't stop it unless you leave it severed indefinitely.

But Wikipedia tells me in quite clear terms that the worm receives instructions from as many as 50,000 randomly created pages on the internet. It also says that the worm doesn't carry a payload, but that it can be instructed to execute one on the fly.

Also, its existence has been verified since October of 2008. So, it's not just been made up for tomorrow.

ok then...im going to leave the computer off till i know whats happening tomorrow. If its hell on earth for computers ill just disconnect my Wireless external nic card and wait for a patch or something to come out and save us...if it is manageable and deleteable then ill fix it my self

You know I just remembered somthing. After my computer was violated by the gator virus, none of the programs on my computer are able to excess the internet (even new programs that I download can't excess the net). So would that mean that even if I have conficker it won't be able to really do anything to my PC?
