PS3 Slim Is confirmed

All features and functions, and costin $299 Globally.

Just got confirmed in the Sony Gamescom Presser.

Available Worldwide by 9/11 this year.

So, the damn thin is finally here. How does a PS3 going for $299 sounds for you guys? And right by September, when everything is ramping up for the Holiday season, and just in time for Final Fantasy XIII in japan.

So, Sony scores one at last?

Although, at this price point, BC is dead.

I mean, it's great that it's only going to be $300, but what kind of drive space does it feature? Is it a new chipset? How does it compare in terms of memory? These are all things to consider, because a cheap PS3 is great, but if they dumbed it back down all the way to punch cards, it's not really a good deal.

120 GB hard drive
Same feature set (read: no backwards compatibility)
33% Smaller
Cost of $299, or 299 euros, or 29980 yen

The link also says that Sony will cut the price of the current model PS3 by $100. Which puts it at the same price as a Xbox360 Pro Bundle.

If I hadn't already caved an bought a PS3 back in January, I'd be excited.

I'll probably buy it, but I am a bit annoyed that I'll be needing to grab a PS2 as well, though I can probably find one pretty cheap now.

Two things come to mind.

A - I'm glad David and I waited, we were this close to buying a split PS3 when we get a place together, now if we do it's half the cost.

B - I'm not sure which is the worst-held secret in gaming, this for the past three months or Marvel vs Capcom 2 on XBLA.

As it looks now, I'll cave and get my first non-handheld console. Can't blame me for hoping for some sort of BC, though xP

Just hunt down a used 60gig instead, if you can find one for under 300. Full backwards compatibility with ps1 and ps2.
