Well, I was waiting for an EMS story that would be worthy to start a thread of this magnitude with, and today just happened to provide said story. Before the story however, a little preface:
This thread, which many have shown interest in reading, will be an area for me to post EMT stories that have moved me or are post worthy. They can be gross, funny, "wtf"-esque, or even sad. I will not be posting names of facilities, hospitals, patients or my partner. Any names that I do use will be made up for the sake of helping the story along or clarifying something. I will also be posting everything in full detail. I will preface the more graphic stories with a warning, so if you are grossed out easily, do not read them. If you are grossed out easily and you do read the story and then complain to me, I warned you. Now, on with the show. Flattery and Concern? WARNING: Language One of the more colorful parts of my job is doing psychiatric transports. Most of these transports come out of the same hospital and go to one of three facilities. The good thing about psych transfers are that usually the patient is younger and physically ok, so we don't have to deal with moving them or oxygen. Psych transfers give me some of the more interesting patients of my day, and today just took the cake. Today I went to pick up a 42 year old male psychiatric patient who was in the hospital for schizophrenia and delusions. This man, Fats McGee I call him, was 270lbs and around 6'4". Now I am 5'1" and significantly smaller than him, and since I am the EMT, I was charged with sitting with him in the back. Now, reading through his history I see that he has a plethora of problems, but what stood out to me the most was that he was....well frankly he was a homicidal maniac. He had been arrested a few years ago for driving his car into his ex-girlfriend's house trying to kill her. He was recently arrested again for violating an order of protection when he tried to steal some shelving from his parents' garage. When his parents found him, he grabbed a pitchfork and chased them around with it, trying to stab them. This, along with his numerous anger management issues and delusions, concerned me to say the least. Now, in a situation such as this, I have the option of calling my dispatcher and telling them that I am uncomfortable taking this patient and to send someone else. The nurses at the hospital assured me that he was going to cooperate and that he wanted to leave. I decided to meet him first and if it seemed like he was going to be a problem, I would call and refuse it. I meet this man, and he actually was quite nice to me. He had a hard time in jail and looked like a wreck, just wanting to find a nice bed to sleep without other inmates trying to bother him. I decided to take the call and just wing it, since he seemed to have taken a liking to me and was talking very nicely to me. After lifting him up in the stretcher he said something along the lines of, "I shouldn't mess with you since you can throw me around like a rag doll." He was impressed that my partner and I could handle his weight and I could tell that after that, he wouldn't be a problem. I relaxed a bit, starting to joke around with him and being nice because I'm not going to judge you right away and if you're nice enough to me, I'll return it in kind. We get going and I'm talking with him about this and that, finding out that he has 2 daughters and a grandson and that he used to work on cars and do landscaping. All was going well until he started talking about the other psych facilities he had been in. I knew beforehand that he made grandiose statements all the time and so I never took it to heart when he began talking about fucking nurses and female patients in the bathroom and having 25 girlfriends. Then, all of a sudden, I get this little gem: "I could fuck you right now if I wanted to, but I won't because I respect a lady as beautiful as you." And then he smiled. I kind of sat there for a moment dumbstruck and a little afraid until he started blabbing about something completely different and I kind of jumped in to keep him NOT thinking about that statement more than he already did. He could have easily overpowered me and my partner and actually had his way with me before any cops could have come. Thankfully I think it was just one of his grandiose statements and since his record had no sexual abuse or anything of the like on it, I kind of shrugged it off. Once he was at the facility and we had cleared up, I laughed about it with my partner, a kind of nervous laughter in the vein of "thank god he didn't try anything." Later one of my friends told me I should have been flattered since he said I was so beautiful to which I said "flattered, but concerned." Feel free to comment or ask any questions you like. As more event happen, I'll post them up and we'll go from there. Happy reading. |

It would seem that he said that more in the line of empowering himself somehow... y'know, sometimes people will state stuff in the "i can, but i won't" just to pass an image of power an authority, when in reality they feel pretty powerless and maybe even scared. Good thing you're concerned though... regardless of how well things seems to be, it always hard to have a job where things can turn REALLY bad in the blink of an eye.
Other than that... yeah, if not a mace, at least a Stun Gun! |

He sounds like maybe he might also exhibit narcissistic personality disorder, which is a component of bona fide sociopathy, complemented by antisocial, if you're worried about that.
To put it this way, if he does exhibit narcissism, he may have taken a bona fide shine to you. That particular disorder entails feelings of superiority and an inability to empathize with others, as well as a need to be admired, which would explain the grandiosity.

If you had to deal with a guy like this next time, what would you do beforehand?

Depends, it's hard to say without meeting the person first or talking to the nursing staff. If they can assure me that he would be cooperative and he seems ok, I really have no grounds to not take the call, especially if it's a female. With a male I have a bit more leeway. If I had to do the call again I wouldn't change my choice. Other than being a creeper he made no indication that he was going to harm me, so no biggie in the end. If I really wasn't comfortable, I would call my boss and refuse the call.

Don't they dope these guys up pretty good if they're actually a threat? Tranquilizers and so forth? I would hope they'd have him on something...
