Don't Download Wii Update 4.2

Wii update 4.2 is out and there are apparently cases of it bricking Wiis. I guess it was intended to either get rid of modding or brick modded Wiis, but it is also affecting some non-modded Wiis. Nintendo is apparently deleting a lot of the threads about it on their Tech Support forums, and if you call them they tell you it will be $85 to fix it. So yeah. Don't download the update.

Anyways, add this to that story going around that DSiWare files are non-transferible between units in some countries, and really, Nintendo just doesn't know how to handle those things.

I've been checking out the threads on the Nintendo Tech Forums, and it's funny how some posts vanish, and then you get posts like "Why was my post deleted?" and "Why are the mods deleting the threads?"

Nintendo apparently subscribes to the 'Ignore it until it goes away' problem solving methodology.

EDIT: Apparently they will now repair it free of charge if it wasn't modded. If it was then FUCK YOU, I guess.

Well... why not?
I mean, they have the right for that, don't they?

It's still something they designed, that you're altering with your modifications.
And most of the times, these modifications are there to hurt Nintendo's income.

Mind you... I'm not active in modding my consoles. For all I know all the mods out there are to benefit their user and making the Wii more user-friendly, but somehow I doubt that...

One is there to make a Nintendo game worth buying to some people.
Another is there to get rid of region coding which should, by all rights, be illegal.

Yes, you can mod your Wii to pirate stuff, but from what some people have told me, the Homebrew channel won't let you that or something.

EDIT: Let me put it another way. Once I buy a Nintendo product, it is mine to do with what I would like, be that mod it, play it, or throw it on the window. They have no hand in it, nor should they. Saying that Nintendo should be able to break modded consoles would be similar to saying that if you bought a house from me I should be allowed to burn it to the ground if you change the paint. If you want to go the piracy argument, not only is everyone who mods their Wii not necessarilly a pirate, but that crime is still wholly separate from the modding. Just because you stole some of my furniture does not justify me burning the house down.

Nintendo also has a Right to refuse service to anyone they want on reasonable grounds, and "You've fucked with the product in ways unintended, voiding any warrenty or service packages" is a really good reason.

Oh, and if you're going to use their update services and other online-services available through the console, they still have a Right to enact patches and policies that hinder or disable people who have made mods. Because not everyone makes harmless mods just for their enjoyment, some can mod unfair advantages or even possible malicious or unwanted content that could harm the servers or offend the users.

Which is a perfectly legitimate stance to take if they didn't release a patch - one that is mandatory to play the more recent games it comes on - that bricks your Wii if you install it.

I did not break my Wii - Nintendo did. I'm sorry, but no, fuck Nintendo.

Yeah, the bricking of unmodded consiles is a pretty shitty oversight. I still say if you did mod and it bricks you, you knew the risks when you modded, and one of those is the service provider dicking you over for modding.

Just because you knew it could happen does not in any remote way mean that it is something they should be able to do.
