Setting up a showdown with the Obama administration, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law sweeping measures to curb illegal immigration. The new law takes effect later this year.


In a signing ceremony carried live on television, Brewer, a Republican, said the law "protects every Arizona citizen." The law makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally and requires local police to ask people about their immigration status even if there is no probable cause to suspect they are in the state or country illegally.

Under U.S. law, immigration enforcement falls to the federal government, not the states. The Arizona law is expected to be challenged in court.

Earlier today at the White House, President Obama called the measures "misguided" and said the federal government would closely monitor the state's actions for possible civil rights violations.

Basically, the law states that, if the police have any suspicion at all that you might be an illegal immigrant, they can ask for your papers, and if you don't have them immediately, They can arrest you, right there.

This law is far too liberal! Citizens of Arizona should be permitted self-defense against the threat of illegal immigration! That's what guns are for!

Yeah, who carries their birth certificate everywhere they go? It's actually a REALLY stupid policy to do so, so I'm guessing very few. The first arrest this causes will be a human rights violation and I hope it's treated as such. The only reason it's not getting repealed right here right now is because the whole thing is essentially bait to get Obama into a pickle with the media over state's rights and ESPECIALLY immigration, because God knows Fox News would love to parade him around as an illegal-loving illegitimate president who was born on Mars or whatever and shouldn't be in office.

This really only highlights that the Republican party is out of touch with reality in the meantime, since he's not jumping to play their game.

Technically, as a US Citizen if you are asked to show papers that you are a citizen you have the right to refuse, especially if there is no cause for them to ask. It's one of the major loopholes of the bill.

Of course, they've countermeasured that by telling cops that if they demand to see someone's papers and they don't show them, they need to find any reason to arrest them so they can run an invasive background check.
