So I'm playing this Solatorobo game for the DS and I gotta say I find it really charming. It seems to be everything good about lighthearted PSX jRPGs reborn. For a DS game, it looks really fucking good, in part due to the drawn backgrounds in a lot of the areas. The writing is silly, but in a good way. It's happy and fun, as any game about animal-people should be. Music is pretty good, too, and it seems like it should do a pretty good job of mixing up the gameplay into different types and such. There's a nifty customization system, too.
I do have one concern, and that's the combat. Built around picking enemies up and throwing them and/or throwing them into each other and/or throwing barrels at them. I'm finding it pretty good right now, but I worry it'll get tiresome in the end. However, that's a concern about where the game *might* be headed Overall I'm really digging it and I recommend grabbing a copy. Here is the intro animation.

... buying it!
Really hate how I'm always broke/poor around the time something awesome that I'd like comes out. Like Sonic, starfox, gundam, armored core, or Disgaea, or really anything with furries, robots, magic, swords or any combination of the above.

So I just did a race, which was okay, and a battle that had me flying short distances to reach and attack enemies. That was kinda eh. But! Neither were actively frustrating, and I think in a game like Solatorobo I'll take not well-realized gameplay elements that regularly mix up the gameplay over a lack thereof. Still digging it.

I heard of this game a while back but the gameplay videos didn't really impress me. Like you said, it's mostly picking up and throwing stuff... like Kirby without the powerups, or Half-Life 2 without any weapons aside from the Gravity Gun.
It gets furry cred with me but I need to know there's something beyond the gameplay. It would help if the gameplay is more fun than it looks, too.

It mixes up the gameplay pretty regularly, it's grind free, the sidequests are fairly amusing diversions, the combat is a bit more fun during boss fights where you have to develop strategies and such, and the writing is oozing with PSX era charm. It looks great for a DS game and the music is good, too.
It's not the best jRPG ever, but if you're looking for a good time to spend on your DS it's looking to be a pretty fun ride. I mean, I can't really say you're going to walk away from the experience talking it up as an awesome, incredible game, but I guess I don't really feel like every game needs to be.

It looks like the closest we're going to get to a spiritual sequel to Mischief Makers which was an awesome N64 platformer where you threw enemies at enemies to defeat them (plus did other things like do rocket jumps and ride a missile through a gauntlet or race, etc.).

I still havn't beat that game yet. (currently stuck on Pheonix Gamma) It was fun but felt lacking up till after the second chapter. If this game really plays close to that then I really need to start looking around amazon for it. (would check gamestop but...)

I agree that not every game needs to be an awesome thrill ride but this one certainly seems MEMORABLE, at least, which is a pretty big point.

As I play more, I gotta say, I fucking love that it's grind free. Easy game, but it just works on a basic level. The lack of grind is because being able to upgrade your robot is based pretty much entirely on getting the funds through sidequests and opening up the slots for it by exploring every little area in the game. Leveling from combat just increases your max health, and it's not really built so that you *can* grind for levels reasonably.
It's a small thing, all in all, but I dig it. EDIT: Like I think I've said but am too lazy to check, this game is just "Pretty good!" But I feel like it's that in a way that's different from most ways that modern games are good, so it has a nostalgic charm to it that carries the experience well. I guess I mostly want to explain why it sounds like I'm overselling a game I just think is "Pretty good!" EDIT2: Game just introduced a sky fishing minigame that's pretty simple and straightforward, but I like how I never feel like I'm doing one thing for too long.
