Let's get this train a moving:
Instant winner was Zachary Taylor, a president so good he had to die.
The Wizard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizard_of_New_Zealand) would have also done well because wizards are fucking awesome.
Newton would have actually done well for having the balls to be such a colossal dickhead.
Lagrange and Cuvier would also have done well, also Coriolanus and Paracelsus- mostly because his full name is Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hoffenheim. Truffuat on the arts side of things.
Ranking shall be done on the Taylor scale of awesomeness
200MilliDarwins-(mD)- Jenna Jameson- Enkidnu- Come now, you are not even trying
100mD- Tucker Carlson- Seil- Saved from the bottom by wearing crazy ties
80mD-Sir Arthur Currie- KrogothWolf-World War 1 was full of crazy awesome people. Boring Canadian generals do not count in this class however.
40mD- Douglas Adams- Zilla. I don't know anything about Adams as a person but I tried to read Hitchikers Guide once and it was awful so he ends up here.
10mD- Julius Caesar-ApeBoy- The late Roman republic is one of the most bullshit periods of history and is done to absolute death when the early Roman republic is far cooler and is actually much more enlightening for historians. As the poster boy for the late republic Caesar is taking a beating from me.
0-William Wallace- TWG- The real Wallace is nowhere near as cool as the movie version. Ambivalence.
20milliTaylors (mT)- Tesla- 42Petunias- While Tesla is pretty cool he is let down by his field. Anyone can be a mad physicist/engineer but it takes a real genius to be a mad mathmatician like Cantor or sociologist like Galton who were working at that time.
40mT- Kubrick- Lummy- Nowhere near my favourite director (Truffuat and Fassbinder hold that and would have done well) but made some alright movies and refuses to discuss his work which appeals to the post-structuralist in me.
40mT- Bowie- Moogle- Made some crazy songs and a rocking movie but his awesomeness is pretty much limited to his clothes.
80mT- Mandela- Garud- A generally nice guy and did a lot of good work but nothing to distinguish him as a great.
150mT- Freddie-RejectedAgain A brillaint creative talent who also drinks yellow water and whose legacy inspires an uprising against a Pop-Idol dominated future where music is outlawed. But until that happens he sits here.
250mT- Guy Fawkes-RR- Every year my friends and I take about 2 days out of examtime to build giant effigies to celebrate the death of Guy Fawkes and his catholic conspirators. Highlights have included fully flammable gallows about 10 ft high and a firework powered Popemobile. The fact that we are willingly to take out exam time to do this sshows how much of an ass he was. King James was a great king and shall live forever in our hearts. He gets a whole lot of points for inspiring awesomeness at Guy Fawkes time.
Now for the excellent answers:
350mT- Benjamin Franklin- Blues- He was rocking in Day of the Tentacle and a generally rocking dude alright. Gets a lot of points for being a renaissance man who doesn't actually live in the renaissance- otherwise known as "Let's copy the Greeks and the Arabs and the Chinese and claim we are awesome". I have no real problem with Franklin but he was just beaten out by stiff competition.
400mT- Leo Tolstoy- POS-
I'm torn on Tolstoy. He was one of my least favourite Russian novelists, mostly because his literary style was about 50 years out of date but he had awesome things to say about educational reform and politics and philosophy. Importantly he didn't really do anything about these last points, mostly just kept them to himself because he was convinced everyone else was dicks, and that my friends, is awesome.
Edison would have been a bit below Franklin about 300mT
500mT- Bookie- Napoleon-
Fully the best bit about Napoleon was not his Empire or all the little anecdotes he spawned.
It is the fact that through his educational reforms and his aggressive promulgating of French sciences alongside the animosity with Britain he inspired fully the best bit of history ever, the Cambridge integral wars.
Loses points for not doing it on purpose.
700mT- Kafka- Wizo, The Ape of Sades-
Wrote awesome books, let the most bohemian of all lives and wanted all his works to be burned when he died because the rest of the world was too primitive to understand them. Rock on.
900mT- Robert E Lee- Overcast-
Doesn't have much to recommend himself but gets a whole crapload of points for nearly being Zachary Taylor 2.0.
1.2T- Jesus- MaskedJedi
The only person cool enough to take down the Taylor, he's so awesome he broke the scale. People might see this as a lame pick but what can I say. It's Jeusus.
Take it away MaskedJedi

Also, after delving into the Mouth-of-Madness-esque Wikipedia page for Southland Tales I discovered that the comics were just sort of prequels for the movie, not the basis for them. 13. Garfield (GARUD) - All the good ones taken? You shame me.
12. Not actually a movie here, but Garfield's just that bad.
11.Wanted (Hawk) - Much better than the book. Matrix rip off, but a damn fun one. I liked it.
10. Batman (Moogle0119) - The second one's better, and I never much liked Keaton as Batman. But it's fun.
9. X-Men 2 (42 Petunias) - I prefer the first one. But I have a grudge against the franchise for the ruination of the characters.
8. 300 (krogothwolf) - So much better than the book. Bloody, campy fun. I don't know if I'd watch it again, but I had fun.
7. Iron Man (Ape Boy) - Bad, bad villain and terrible CGI. But RDJ was so amazing. A very good movie, in my top 20 for 2008.
6. V For Vendetta (Zilla) - It doesn't get the book at all, but it's an enjoyable action flick with Natalie Portman's best performance.
5. Watchmen (The Wizard Who Did It) - Poorly paced and too short. But the actors (specifically JEH and JDM) deliver some intensxe performances. I do think that it's to devoted to the book, and it's best when he does his own thing. But that sex scene.. so bad.
4. Spider-Man 2 (Ravashak) - I think that these movies are too emo, but this one is excellent. Everyone delivers, the fights are great, and he doesn't ruin the characters too much.
3. Sin City (The Wandering God) - It's exactly like the book, and I'm fine with that. Rodruigeuz's second best movie.
2. Men in Black (Smarty McBarrelpants) - I've never read the book, but I love this movie. I've seen it countless times and will willingly see it more.
1. The Dark Knight (Mr. Bookworm) - Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like the batgrowl, Batpod is awesome, I cheer when Gordon reappers, Aaron Eckhart is an extremely sexy man, and Michael Cane rock my sock off.
Superman Returns and Batman Begins would have done well.

Mr.Bookworm
06-03-2009, 09:20 PM
EDIT: Open-world games are quite loosely defined, to be honest.
I suppose I should supply a personal definition, then. I think of open-world games as games where the game is built around the concept of it being, well, open. You have access to a massive amount of area that is not related to your current mission, and you are given the freedom to just mess around as you will in the sandbox instead of tackling some arbitrary mission. Whereas, say, KotOR gives you merely the choice of which mission you want to embark on first
That's not a very good definition, so I'm guessing a side-by-side comparison would help. Let's take KOTOR. It's setup is basically one pre-programmed tutorial sequence. Then you are given a selection of worlds, and you get to choose which order you complete them in, which all funnels into a final linear sequence. Within this framework you are given choice, but it all stays within the framework.
Now, let's take, say, Oblivion. At the start, you are given a linear dungeon. After you complete this, however, it could basically be described as a circle with dots marked into it. However, you could play for hours upon hours completely ignoring any quest whatsoever. This is not just allowed, it is actively encouraged.
So, I guess that's what separates it for me. Again, not a very good definition, but there you go. This could actually be an interesting discussion, though. Anyone up for a Playing Games thread?
EDIT: And if I'm denying KOTOR, I'm pretty sure that disqualifies Mass Effect.

6. Crackdown (krogo) - Crackdown is stupid, stupid fun. I stopped caring about trying to find a plot after I drove a SUV up a building, jumped out, and killed a mook by landing on him.
5. Assassin's Creed (SMB) - Really should have been called "Screwing Around Rooftops".
4. Oblivion (GARUD) - Pretty fun.
3. Fallout 2 (Greed) - Really, really, really good. I stopped playing it after it kept crashing, though.
2. Fallout 3 (Ape Boy) - I've been playing this game a lot, lately, and I must say that Bethesda did a really good job.
1. Fallout 1 (Overcast) - One of the best games ever. Period.
Take it away, Overcast.
Far Cry 2 would have placed high. Escape Velocity Nova is great, and I love Age of Empires II. The original Black & White is still fantastic. On that note, Fable II is awesome.

14. Ocarina of Time (Fifth) - Someone's probably going to mad at me. Ahahahahaha.
12. Destroy All Humans 2 (RR) - The first one was pretty good, though. I was considering the first one, but the second one has even more wacky antics.

Heh you really ought play Morrowind, I must say I liked it more than Oblivion due to the fact of there not being so much balance issues at times and the minor knowledge that the class you pick will be the class you stay. Though I will have to warn you...cliff racers...
And ha I may have picked AoE 2, it really was the first PC game I ever grew addicted to fully, though I didn't believe it to be open world. Great memories.

Open world isn't well defined. For example, Metroid is technically an open world series, even though I wouldn't consider it one.

And I'll get back to you on greatest fear soon.

Open World is different then nonlinear I believe. Open World just means a game someone can freely roam the virtual world at will and at any time. BG 2 is sort of like that but not 100% so its a grey area in the genre.

Alrighty lets get this over with.
We separate into categories!
Cliche and not afraid of
SMB-That I've achieved nothing worthwhile in my life and won't in the future: I could live like a bum all my life without an issue. The possibility I haven't achieved enough just isn't a worry of mine.
TeeDubDubDeeEye-That I'll die alone and unloved, a bitter shell of a wreck of a man: This is a possibility yes, but one I'm with perfectly good terms with. There is a section in there that is particularly dark, but the rest of it just makes this a cliche joke.
Nikose-That girl rejecting me: That girl already rejected me. I don't think I have to fear that anymore.
Clever and made me laugh...but not winners.
POS-F.E.A.R: My feeble imagination would have never expected to see this one.
Fifth-Fear: A wonderful joke...but I don't fear fear.
Krogoth-Family wondering what I thought: It would have been in a serious place, but the situation was just ridiculous to me. Think a better plot next time.
Former Fear:
Mr. Bookworm-Heights: Used to be, but I spent some time mountain climbing and after a while it just dissipated.
GARUD-Glass Ceiling: When I had my first experience out of being straight this became a fear. But logic helped me get over it.
Moogle-Public Speaking: After being in a few plays it really didn't affect me anymore.
In the plain old not winners circle is:
Lumen-Nature: I don't fear nature. I've been out there. It ain't all that bad.
Things everyone should fear:
bluestarultor-giant spiders: If they exist you should fear them. Because you are small enough to be prey now. Though I don't fear spiders of regular size.
Archbio-Buried alive: I tried this once, and even under a very thin layer of dirt this freaked me the fuck out.
First place ties:
42-Losing sanity/memories: If you may have stuck with memories you may have avoided a first place tie. Though sanity loss can sometimes be an amazing thing. It is the closest anyone can ever come to having a mystical adventures these days I would say.
Seil-Everyone being killed, and then me: If you would have left out the first part there may not have been a tie for first. Though believe me my death was the important part. I don't fear my loved ones dying.
Rejected-Fear of being crippled/kept in a vegetative state: Like everyone else if you had been less general and kept to vegetative state you would have broken the tie. But I don't fear being crippled.
Autowinner would have been, The fear that there is nothing after death. Better answers for the runner ups as said before would be death, permanently lost memories, or being kept permanently in a vegetative state. Key being the permanence of all those things.

Personally I found Making Money to be crap but dunno what Bookers thought of it. Gonna say Nation by Terry Pratchett even though I haven't read it and I don't know that Bookie has just because it's been generally heralded as The Best Pratchett Book Ever Forever (Actually I did read like fifteen pages of it, which were all fantastic, so).
FWIW I dug http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Revenant out of his post history as something he recommends but then I realized that I couldn't forgive myself for going with the non-Pratchett answer. So someone else can roll with that one.

EDIT: RE: Nation; I actually got the book right around when it came out because it popped up on my dad's B&N email notifiers and he remembered that I like Pratchett, so I got the chance to read it before reading any reviews, which is why I was surprised to see the amount of "Best Pratchett Ever" or similar statements. Personally, it's a Pratchett book so you know it's great, but for me personally I don't think it's in his top 10.
But then again I enjoyed Making Money, so what do I know.

Hunters Run--George RR Martin

06-08-2009, 09:19 PM
I add my usual caveat here that it's a Pratchett book and so still relatively good despite the stuff I find terrible it's just that it sets up this "Moist versus the Evil Banker" plot and then the Evil Banker never does anything and sits sort of quietly in the corner going insane while Moist swans around letting the usually seedy vicious violent and cynical denizens of A-M fall head over heels in love with him.
By comparison Going Postal (the first Moist von Lipwig book) had a villain which actively drove the plot, was convincingly portrayed as being at least as cunning as the protagonist, and made at least one credible attempt to end said protagonist's life, all while backdropping Moist's conflict with him with a lot of generalized (and well-warranted!) mistrust, suspicion, conflict and deliberate sabotage by the various people surrounding him. Which all in all I felt made for a much more interesting novel.
Lumenskir
06-08-2009, 10:17 PM
Which all in all I felt made for a much more interesting novel.
Well, yeah. GP is definitely in my personal high tier, but I think MM is a fun enough outing to save it from reviews that paint it as a Granny-quality book. Then again, I wasn't that annoyed by the overarching plot, as I think it's one of the better books for amusing little world building exercises and interesting sub-characters, and with so much rambling around the unplot doesn't bother as much.
Now, I guess a case could be made that the various collection of things I liked (the pervy dead soul, the extremely exact water counter machination, money 'just about' breaking even to make, etc.) could have been sprinkled around the series proper without needing their own book, but then you're getting dangerously close into fanwanking some 'perfect' Franken-Pterry book and frankly that doesn't seem sane or fair.

Yeah that was pretty much my sum-up of the book too. I'm not a fan of Moist in this one and GP was like a billion times better.

4. Nation (Fifth) - I've been looking for a copy of this for ages, but I have yet to find one. Should probably just order it off Amazon.
3. Making Money (SMB) - Definitely not Pratchett's high point. I've been rereading the Disc books, and I read this one right after GP, and the drop-off was really noticeable.
2. Harry Potter (Masked) - Yes I like the Harry Potter books.
1. Hunter's Run (RA) - Wuved this book. I picked it up while I was over in Canada, and devoured it. Credit where credit's due, though. Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham both wrote it too.

Assuming you want an answer they just don't seem all that different from the whole crapload of prog-rock that the 80s spat at us.
I mean this is only based on the popular songs that everyone is heard and maybe there is something super about them but thier big singles weren't enough to sell it to me.
But the real answer is that anything you like is shit.

Ha thanks for a real answer. Also there is much more to gain from the albums themselves. The singles though have the sort of pop that is supposed to suck people in so that they will actually buy the album. One of the strengths of most of the members having experience with the real life music industry include tactics like that. Though I won't force you to buy any albums from them, but it is probably streaming somewhere if you are interested in looking further.
BHS, do you wear a beret, hang out in Starbucks, double major in Philosophy and Literature, smoke a cigarette with an old-timey filter and talk loudly of your tastes to strangers who manage to sit near you for extended periods of time?

None of the above. Though part of my degree is in literary analysis. So that part is kind of true. Philosophy generally pretty bollocks though. Except Camus who is awesome.
Mostly we spend our time in our offices drinking whiskey and smoking cigars, so partially true? I mean we would go to cafes but you can't take whiskey in.
None of the above.
I should probably let that guy go, then.

On the note of rock bands, I knew nothing I put out there was going to be able to compete with The Who. 'Cept some people like Zepplin better, but THAT was already taken, too.

Yeah the Who are totally awesome. Quadrophenia is greatness.
Also

You'd have to live in Aberdeen, Scotland. The disadvantages of living here far outweigh any benefits from not actually having anything to do all day.

I was pushing on the possibility that he might try to stave away from the old school as his favorites. A common occurrence in certain areas of Seattle, where the attempt to look like an individual is just one tier of music snobbery.

Note that had I composed this list yesterday, it might have been completely different.
Up until I start numbering these, they're in a random order.
God (GARUD) - Nope, sorry.
Electricity (Greed) - Read the rules, yah durn hooligan.
Central Air (TWG) - Boring.
Homes (Twiddy) - ^
The wheel (krogoth) - Pretty neat, but still boring.
The mattress (Overcast) - ^
Plumbing/aqueducts (Moogle) - ^
Recumbent bicycles (Zilla) - I like riding my bikes upright, thank you very much.
George RR Martin (Seil) - I would rip out my testicles if it would make the next ASoIaF come out faster, but I'm going to disqualify you for breaking the spirit.
Slap Chop (Krylo) - I like cutting stuff manually.
Shamwow (RR) - Booooooooooooring.
Porn (Lumenskir) - No thanks.
Modern medicine (Fenris) - Old medicine is way cooler.
That Death Star laser thing they have in California (MJ) - Not a contender until they blow up California with it.
7. Robots (DbS) - Robots are pretty cool, but aren't even nearly as cool as they are in fiction.
6. Tools for making fire (42) - Fire has the advantage of being both useful and looking awesome.
5. Writing (Archbio) - Gar, I'm going through a bad case of writer's block right now.
4. Trains (SMB) - Trains are actually pretty awesome.
3. The printing press (CJ) - Without which my bibliophilia could not exist.
2. The fiction novel (Bluey) - The foundation of my whole life, pretty much.
1. Tesla coil (RA) - Whatever SMB and his horrible taste says, tesla coils are the physical embodiment of mad science. It's a shame he never got that death ray working, though.
