Nikose and I have one going if any of you would like to join us.
[Edit] Okay, having the black screen login error. Great.
Here's the direct browser link: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=b1c2c98460fe9a3a7cf296ca8d725230
[Edit2] Other players can access the server, but neither me or Nikose can. The hell? I tried from the host computer with no success. It drops me to a black window and the console reads "You must log in!"
[Edit3] Restarted with name verification off so it stops kicking people. :P
Looks good for now, I think we just need to update our java software.

I don't even know what your stuff is Nik, or anyone elses for that matter. I've just been building my tower. I think might add some more rooms to it and put a wall around.
At least if people are spread out a bit we can utilize the space around us properly and nobodies going to be encroaching on anyone elses stuff.
Really we should have built it like NPF City; a physical representation of the forums, complete with subforums and our own private domains where we can wage civil war on our neighbours.

Yeah, my servers tend to implode, but if I keep this thing backed up relatively frequently we won't have near as much of a problem. The...um...other server we had set up needed about 1.5GB for a full backup, Minecraft only needs about 5MB.
I'm in right now, though I might do a quick reload at night to create a couple admins.

As a quick caveat; many of our esteemed builders have laid claim to land and constructed things already. Not only above ground, but below as well.
If you intend to build something of your own, please try to avoid building too close to someone else without their permission, and perhaps more importantly if you should break into their house and let loose lava or water all up in their shit, please attempt to fix it before you leave. or at least leave some marker for where the water came from so the builder can fix the problem properly.
That said I have two things that are open to renovation by anyone and everyone that wishes to. I'd ask that you not completely tear them down though as you can imagine quite a fair bit of work went into some of these things.
The first is of course Library Tower
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/4406/clipboard03.png
The interior of the upper tower is rather large, and also rather empty. Feel free to add additional stairs, floors, rooms, whatever you think of. But try to avoid destroying what's already there without asking someone first.
Also the stack of books that reaches from the skybox to the sublevels of the basement should really be left alone.
The basement itself is rather expansive, lots of tunnels and exits me and Nik built out of there when we found ourselves trapped.
Try to avoid destroying the sponges for now, since the damn place seems to have a big flooding problem what with everyone digging to and fro.
The second is harder to find; http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/8484/clipboard04r.png
This lake as seen from the Skyway contains an underground bunker I built, there's practically nothing inside save for the entrance, exit, and tiling.
Note that the floor tiles represent the boundary between you and a lava filled world. So I'd suggest not breaking them open.
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/2836/clipboard05a.png
http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/8727/clipboard02.png
You can't see the entrance very well from here, but they've been marked pretty clearly. Just follow the path to the side of the house toward the lake, and two holes will be right in front of you.
One is dry, that's the entrance.
One is flooded, that's the exit.

Pyros' Minecraft Pro-tip:
Whenever you build tunnels or caves, dig 2 blocks deep in the ceiling, floor, or walls, and place a spongeblock (looks like cheese to me) there, and then cover it up with a block that matches the rest of the wall. This hides the spongeblock, allowing your caves and tunnels to look cool without sponges, and keeps griefers from just waltzing through and deleting all your spongeblocks.
If you make a habit of doing this for every new tunnel made, for every few feet of tunnel, then unless someone just rips the underground a new one, fills the rest of the world with water, then your creations should be fine. Even if someone rips the underground a new one, your tunnels should still be water proof to the point that repair is just a matter of walking through and sealing one or two holes and draining the water out of a few portals of water between dry spots.
Minecraft Fun tip: Watervators:
For those of us without developers tools, moving upwards is a difficult proposition, unless we're in water, or less pleasantly, lava. Scaling heights, especially from the lower cave levels, proves tricky and somewhat tedious, especially if we accidentally fall back down again, or set our spawn underground.
However, due to sponge blocks making it quite possible for water to defy gravity, a vertical shaft of water can be created that exits out into your dry, secret underwater base, making exit and entry a matter of floating upwards to the surface. For kudos, you should make a nearby second tunnel of normal atmosphere (air!) for fast downwards movement, making essentially, turbolifts: one down, one up.

quick tip for you explorers.
I have the Warbot house, that's the stuff i'm privately working on. However, i made a Public area.
Take the red tower and run to the giant Tree. Right after that you should see a small Ground fortification.
If you enter it, you will find underground:
to your left there is a quick tunnel towards open sea
to your left there is also a small gold room with a ventilation shaft
To your right you will find a underground house with 2 tunnels (long ones)
a underground tunnel that takes you right back to the red tower.
and a underground tunnel that leads to a lava bridge and a dead end.
back up and keeping to the right, you will go past a free room (pretty big and empty)
and a little further you will come out in the middle of forest, right next to a big red arrow.
This is all built right on the edge of the map, so it's like a Coastline fortress with Escape tunnels.
Now, i would like to ask you to not tear it down or close these paths (unless of course, the long tunnels get in the way of your own major buildings), but feel free to change it's look or add new areas. It's a free zone for y'all.

I added windows to my small tunnel (that show off randomly made holes in the wall [one of which got flooded accidentally]) and decorations and all that. Along with the tunnel upgrade, I added two random small facilities behind my giant yellow letters, more floating blocks, and a really, really big tree.
Oh, and a random staircase thing that leads to nowhere specifically. Probably a trail I haven't made yet leading to the tree. Also, I think I stumbled upon someone's underground area, because as I was digging I came across red blocks that appeared to represent an entrance and a large hole with mushrooms. I ended up covering whatever I hole I had just to be safe.

We're starting to run low on room. I'm going to suggest we get the SMP server up and running tonight- that means we'll keep BOTH servers up, if at all possible.
SMP is the paid version- "Survival Multi-player". Despite being called 'survival' there are no monsters in the paid multiplayer.
Another known issue: Inventory erases itself after server wipes.
Also, world is infinite- there's the distinct possibility that we could go to a place where you will never see each other again.
Hoooooooowever, health bars exist and lava kills your ass. be warned. also, fireplaces don't work until a GM spawns an already-burning furnace.
beyond that? We can run everything. Between Bob and I we can totally manage an SMP server with constant GM attention.
Edit: Also, contributed to the glass ceiling. We need that in place to keep everyone else down where they belong.

Changelog, morning of August 08th.
Added small stairway to south of Karesh Skyscraper, connects skyway and the roof of the world. It's rather close to where people spawn now, so it should help those that want to get up higher quickly.
Connected roof of Karesh Skyscraper (Glass section) to roof of world. Height difference meant I needed a set of stairs so that visitors could get up without jumping. Have placed stairs over the road of Hawk's castle so as to avoid killing grass below
Found hollowed out undeground section of the "Death trap" Target to had been filled in. And the lava reservoir replaced with water. Have redug center dot out and chaged it into a jumping puzzle. It is escapable as of now. But changes may be made later.

yeah, I'll just be doing building cleanup on the free server, and spending lots of time on the paid-server constructing wooden structures.
If people are interested in a co-op build, I'd like to suggest building a classical-style castle wall, to contain a city of small wooden houses.
by my numbers, we'd need about 25 wooden houses, each would need to be 6 squares x 6 squares to really 'matter'. Adding extra floors would be a personal choice.
That means we would need the castle itself to be... let's say 50 x 50 square. Gives us room for some roads.
We would essentially need:
- A woodcutters guild, for both gathering wood to bring back for use in tools and building, as well as replanting trees so we still get growth.
- A Miner's guild, for being underground with the pickaxes, digging away; and
- Builder's guild, for crafting mining picks / axes out of wood/stone, and sending us down on our merry way- as well as laying out the castle foundations and building upwards. (Walls should be 5 squares thick for castle, so that we can have interior walkways and corner towers.
who here likes this?

Alright that settles it. I'm buying the game tomorrow (or tonight if I get tired of watching Dr. Who), spending some quality time on the wiki to figure stuff out, then I'll help build the town because that sounds like it would be awesome. Although I would recommend a slightly larger space since while most houses will be 6x6, guild halls deserve more room than that. And if we aren't going to have guild halls then screw you we're having them even if I have to build them myself.

Can always try a Labrynth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labrynth) design. They're specifically designed to make you walk far to get somewhere close.
I may go with something like this, especially since the whole insanity-architecture aesthetic I've got going on down there guarantees a high rate of becoming totally fucking disoriented and turned around.
EDIT The only downside is that a labyrinth really requires planning and not the largely ad-hoc, no-idea-what-the-fuck-i'm-honestly-doing approach I'm basically restricted to.

With a freak accident and a very large tree I ended up creating eternally flowing waters of life for a while there, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in constructing an aqueduct or something from those to the new castle.
Of course over such a long distance I don't think it'd be entirely feasible, but I think we could make a new version somewhere closer. It might be a nice touch to add some plumbing of somesort.

The water will flow for 7 blocks distance down a channel, if you put a level drop of one or two blocks before it runs out, you can channel the water over almost any distance

What was the surprise going to be?
Edit -- Right well you might as well promote me to Master of All Trades (or at least add my name to the Builders Guild list in addition to the woodcutter). Any remaining obstructions in the build site are no more than 3 blocks high, thanks to yours truly. Also there's a large deposit of stone on the build site measuring 8W x 3H x somethingL that is a result of my endeavors. I don't even know how many stone shovels and pickaxes I went through (it was a lot), but I made sure to use up every one that I crafted so that nothing was wasted. Oh and in the corner past the large deposit of stone there are 12 blocks of iron ore near a crafting table. I didn't want to try messing with the furnaces again since the last time I tried they didn't want to work. So yeah, off to bed now since I think I've been clearing crap away for the past two hours, and I didn't even realize it until I used up my last shovel and pick axe and was about to craft more.

I've decided to stay out of the SMP server until the furnace (and personal inventory) works properly, as I want to create a railroad/subway system for when the castle is up and villages or estates have formed in the world.
Currently, this is not possible, since I can't set up a huge foundry to create the cart(s), nor the rails.
Let alone actually creating a motorized cart.

Well, that would be pretty sweet.
Put me up a 2x5 wall of furnaces, a big pile of iron ore (naw, not really. I'll mine for it, just like everybody else) and I'll be happy to connect all y'all's houses together with the S-Bahn.
See, it'll be called the S-Bahn, because it'll be made by me (Melfice Silesius), and because of the connection with the German fast-tram system.

Okay, got the design done in PDF format. Gimme a second to upload it.
edit: http://parkercomics.com/uploads/Castle%20Layout.pdf
This is the construction I have in mind. It leaves relatively small houses inside, but many houses for our small server. We can mark off who lives where immediately by claiming houses, and setting up what services will be where - Foundry, Crafters shops, and storehouses.
Also once we're done with this construction I'm totally setting up 'seige mode' and god have mercy on you all.
Edit2: forgot to mention in original document but OUTER WALL of fortification should be 3 blocks thick, building outward. Entrance to Castle should be 9 blocks wide- Doors do not work yet, so we will have to wait on creating a block for the entrance till later.

Where will the guilds reside?
Or is this simply the castle-town, and will the guilds be housed in the castle-proper?
EDIT: Got a feeling I'm going to laugh about the answer.
Also, really? Wall: 25 blocks high?
That seems quite extreme.
Nikose Tyris
08-10-2010, 08:57 AM
Well that could work just fine if that's how you want it. :P This castle-town will be inside the walled city zone. We can add a full-On Castle behind it easily enough.
Edit: Also, Milil has a doctor's appointment at 1:30 today, so I'll be at that. Afterwards, I'll be back to continue construction.

If we stick to Nik's "blueprint", the wall will be 25 blocks high and 5 blocks thick.
Unless Notch suddenly introduces the mobs, and somebody is stupid enough to get themselves blown up by one or more Creepers standing taking a piss against the wall, it will be secure enough.

I just stopped and restarted the paid server to stop the lagging. It looks like the thing builds up some sort of a buffer over time and eventually chokes the process into submission. Not sure I can fix that other than log in remotely from work and restart it whenever it gets laggy.
Looking into other options now.
[Edit]
I agree that it isn't very playable but it's not lag- it's the CPU cycles on the server. Somewhere deep in the guts of minecraft it does a little calculation for every block within X yards of the player- water flows, stone sits still, sand falls when there's nothing under it, and so on. It's doing this server side now and suddenly the load has jumped up 10-20x what it would normally be. When a player removes or places a block it does even more. He may even be calculating the dynamic lighting server side, which would explain why some blocks show up pitch black until the server catches up.
Imagine trying to run dwarf fortress with multiple forts all on the same computer. All that pathfinding, terrain generation... ouch. Minecraft is actually really bandwidth light, but until Notch optimizes the block stuff it's going to bring most servers to their knees.
For now the only solution is gigantic single-core CPUs for our servers, unless Notch is taking advantage of multi-cores (but I don't think he is).
Actually, my 3.0GB P4 CPU is about the most we can do until Notch patches the damn thing.
