So Sleeping Dogs, thought it was just another True Crime game? A cheap GTA knockoff? That's kinda what I thought, but I was bored so I bought it.

I was wrong.

The game is amazing so far, the combat is like an improved version of Arkham Asylum's which brings some challenge and makes it feel more like a kung fu movie. The driving physics are a good balance between GTA's shitty super realistic ones and SR's fun but probably too cartoony for this setting ones. The writing is good so far and does an excellent job of imitating the Hong Kong crime films it is emulating. On the technical side, it runs quick and well on the PS3, no errors or bugs and the graphics are great (I've heard the Pc version is particularly stunning, being one where they put a lot of effort into taking advantage of the PC's power).

Basically if you're looking for a brawler or an open world game I heavily recommend it*



*I'm only a few missions in so it could nosedive, but it seems very solid so far.

Gadgets are replaced with brutal and really well executed environmental hazards. Sticking peoples heads in fans, slamming a shutter down on their spine, driving them into power transformers, opening a car boot, putting their neck down and slamming the boot on it.......

So more like a Chinese Rorschach.

Also the game is loaded with secrets, I just found an unmarked merchant who must only show up at certain times of day who sold me a stolen sound system for my apartment.

Some scientists somewhere desperately need to do a case study as to how the same group of writers and artists and programmers and designers who came up with Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 could then somehow lose all semblance of talent before creating Mass Effect 3.

Are you sure about that? The store page on Steam lists German as one of the languages. Alternatively, you could use the power of Gifting to circumvent the Berlin Censor Wall once again.

Played a little more, good times good times. I'm really enjoying biking around at high speeds on the opposite side of the road. And the Triad DLC I got with the Last Stand style fighting was exactly a time-waster I was looking for in this game. Helps me hone my martial arts skills too.

Biggest disappointment so far was the cock-fighting mini-game. I was really stoked to take control of a chicken myself and claw other chickens on my way to the top. Their equivalent of a really slow slot machine with chickens is way less interesting.

So there's a demo out on PS3 and 360. There's a chase through some streets, some fist fighting, and some shooting. No driving though. Still, the taste was enough and I bought the game on PC (because of the fancy graphics).

Also, the whole talking in English most of the time with bits of Cantonese scattered throughout reminds me of Firefly, which is great.

This game is freaking awesome. Really awesome.

I love the combat, the flow of it feels amazing, and car controls are pretty awesome. Though I have issues wanting to go back to driving cars after driving motorcycles, those are so much fun.
