So Borderlands 2 just released this week and from what I've played so far it looks like 2K still knows what works and is even learning from what didn't in the first game.
Major differences I've seen so far:
1. No fall damage, which is good since it was really just an inconvenience to delay shield regen.
2. Sprinting. FUCKING SPRINTING.
3. Those "challenges" where you got xp bonuses for doing everything at every amount now earn you Badass Points instead, which you can spend on a small bonus to all your guns, shield or to yourself (mainly stuff like damage, reload, health, etc) in curved increments starting at 1%. Fuck. Yes.
4. There's now an auto-collect for money, health and ammo that drops from breakables and enemies (another inconvenience removed.)
5. Capstone upgrades for each upgrade tree are absolute dope. I've played Zero so far and his sniping capstone is a 999-limit stackable buff from critical hits from guns, which only decays if you stop doing crits for a while. The other two I saw are also far stronger than the capstones I saw in the first game.
6. Rakks are somehow more annoying than before, and their hitboxes were adjusted so that your best bet for fending them off is a well-timed shotgun blast or melee attack.
7. You can move during Fight For Your Life, which actually already managed to let me inch around a corner to score a second wind that I wouldn't have gotten if I was stationary.
8. Map design seems to have changed to better accommodate shortcuts to avoid having to backtrack from most side paths, generally through some pretty awesome jumps that make you feel like a badass for pulling them right after murdering everything that moved.
9. Apparently custom skins also appear as items that you can use to unlock the appropriate skin, unless you choose to sell them to the vendors or drop them so an ally can have it.
10. Zero is the best damn thing that every happened to this franchise.
I'm very optimistic that things will be even better once I get to vehicles and enemies that aren't bandits and snow-monkeys.
Anyone else feel the same way about this game so far?

I was playing around with the build calculator on the website, and built a Zer0 that should, in theory, be able to clear out an entire room of enemies with his melee while constantly staying cloaked. So yeah I'm excited for when I reach that point.
6. Rakks are somehow more annoying than before, and their hitboxes were adjusted so that your best bet for fending them off is a well-timed shotgun blast or melee attack.
Don't know what you're talking about, I've been sniping Rakks left and right.
Also, while Zer0 is pretty damn awesome ("Hilarious, you've just set off my trap card!") I'm not going to pass judgement since I've yet to hear the dialogue of the other classes.
Anyway, the game also has a bunch of crazy new gun modifiers, such as guns becoming more accurate as you fire them, or instead of reloading you just chuck your gun at an enemy where it then explodes like a grenade as a new gun materializes in your hand.

Slag weapons are definitely a huge game changer for borderlands. Give cataclysm spec'd Maya a slag SMG and watch her wreck shit five ways to next thursday. Where she really shines is in co-op. Singling out a badass mob to take it out of combat for a few seconds while the team gets rid of extras is damn handy. Been playing as cataclysm spec for the majority of the time but even a couple points her harmony tree has a huge impact on survival in general.
Glad they cut back blast element's overall damage output compared to BL1. Blast more or less overshadowed everything.
oh yeah, aldurin. You forgot a couple things about the badass stats: there's no cap and they carry across on all characters you make.

Pyros thinks Zero is cool because it's essentially the B1 Siren mixed with B1 Hunter sword for awesome, and I have the Siren build on Onlive Borderlands that let me do the "kill someone, go invis, uninvis, and then go invis again to clear out encounters if I want to thing.
Though my compy's a little outdated, and I may've hit the bottlecap based on my CPU and PCI drive for being able to play newish games, so when I play Borderlands it may have to be on the Xbox I don't have. Le'Sigh.
In the meantime, I still have not completed most of the original game's DLC, and I can always hope BD2 will show up on Onlive...which doesn't let me play with you guys, though.

Not really missing much there.
Island of Dr. Ned is just a nonstop of slow ass zombies on that either slow you down or cover your screen in vomit that slows you down longer. The main enemy in this one is the infectious boredom caused by too much of a good thing.
Moxxi's DLC is a dull waste of time full of uninspired waves of enemies and only benefit it has is the bank.
Claptrap's robot revolution is amusing for a bit but goddamn if you ever thought claptrap was annoying before he takes being a longwinded pain in the ass annoyance to astronomical new heights.
Only dlc worth playing was Secret Armory of General Knoxx.

I've been playing around with the skill calculator and I think I've worked out a Siren build that will allow for constant health regen AND constant phaselock. It's more of a solo build but it should pretty much dominate, unless there are enemies later on who can overcome the ridiculous regen rate, but since it also pulls enemies together it should be ok anyway.
It is my intention to break the game with Siren like I did last time.

Yeah, the Bloodshed skill tree seems to dwarf the others early on, since it does allow for a huge range of options for surviving and killing. Though I'm mainly focusing on Killing Blow (just run up to a badass when they're at a quarter health and rip their face off), Grim and Followthrough (killing things is even better when it facilitates more killing). Once I'm high enough to hit capstone I might respec to the Sniping tree for a while just to see how ridiculous Critical Ascension can be.

Got it on Steam, on which my name is Treble.
Been playing with the Commando, and have been having fun. Although I will say the Commando seems to be the most vanilla of the classes. My three main weapons have been a Shotgun, a SMG, and a Sniper Rifle, with a Rocket Launcher floating around in my inventory until I got my fourth gun slot.
Currently, am level 20 and have been building my commando very tanky. Went down and got the rocket pods for the turret by boosting my shield regen and lowering my delay and increasing the time my turret stays out and now I am going down the right tree for some Regen when my shields are full.
Also: Unce, Unce, Unce. Wub, Wub, Wub.
EDIT: Also, the Commando's one liners aren't as good as everyone elses.

The commando turret beat Wilhelm in 30 seconds, I was actually kind of disappointed on my end. So he is much harder on some of the other classes, will have to keep that in mind.

Dammit, I have yet to find any type of homing grenade. However, I just got a blue grenade that pulls people in toward it before it explodes into a field that does damage over time.
Before that I had on that split into 10 child grenades that stuck to people and exploded into slag.

That is badass. At what level do you have to be to find crazy awesome shit like that?
I was level 20 doing sidequests in the Fridge, it came up and I was like "they kept transfusion grenades?" because in Borderlands you could have infinite healing with the Commando skill that regenerated grenades after kills if you had that type of grenade (obviously awesome since everything else does shit tons of damage but can't heal you like grenades can). It's especially nice since I noticed a couple of times that if you throw it and then get downed then the health lingers until you get a second wind, increasing your chances of not getting slapped back to the ground.
Also, if your fire weapon has pixelated flare gun projectiles then ditch it, because it's complete shit and doesn't even count as a fire weapon for when you have to ignite some part of the environment.
And crystaliks are pansies, just run up to them and triple-kneecap them with melee attacks and they die.

So it wasn't just me. I chucked my turret basically just as he stepped out of the ground. He pretty much just stood in front of it and let me shoot him with this rather awesome caustic pistol I got by helping that crazy 13 year old with her tea party. Between the turret and the pistol he was 90% dead by time my turret died (and I had basically no turret skills at all). Then he started walking away to pick up a train car so I just shot him in the back a few times with that caustic pistol and finished him off without ever even being attacked. Handsome jack was still taunting me on the echo when everyone else butted in to say how awesome I was for beating Wilhelm.
It was a bit of a let down after all the hype. Maybe they'll patch the game to fix it. Like I've had harder fights from a couple of bandits.

I'm starting to experience a problem where when playing as Zer0, which is intended for long-range assassination and opportunistic close-range strikes with melee, I see my strategy fitting more into the style of Brick. Mainly in that I'm running up to almost everything and whacking it with whatever gun gives the most melee damage until it finally procs Killing Bl0w, then I rely on Rocket Launchers and Explosive Shotguns to get second winds when that strategy fails.
I guess the big issue is that I'm heavily investing in the left side of the Bloodshed tree, which focuses on ridiculously powerful melee strikes and crazy bonuses to various things when I get kills.

Yeah... my experiance was a bit more difficult than that. I was able to whittle his shields down pretty easily with my plasma caster, which then caused his flying bots to start repairing him. I'd switch over to either my shotgun or AR and start doing damage (the phaselock didn't really do much to him), but before I did too much his missiles would start hammering me and my entire health bar is basically gone. I had to switch out my class mod for a health regen and basically kite him around for several minutes, using phaselock on his smaller flyers to get through their invulnerable shields and get health back, then only try plasma castering him when there was only 1 flyer left.
I was level 17 at the time, so I duno if I was just underlevelled, my gear was crappy, or if he's just hard to siren solo.

I just put one point into Killing Blow, because I don't see the point of having more than +100% melee damage when they're already at a third of their health. And since I'm also using Be Like Water and that one skill that increases melee/gun damage and movement speed when I kill someone, I tend to drop their hp down to 1/4 or 1/5 so they die in one hit when Killing Blow does activates.
But with that aside, I love playing Zero up close and personal. I feel like a dervish when alternating between point blank sniper shots and melee attacks. But that doesn't stop me from playing at range either. Despite all my points being in the Bloodshed tree sniping is still pretty damn powerful, and very satisfying. The thing is, while you can usually manage with weaker weapons, you can't really do that with sniper rifles. You need to have the best damage you can get on those suckers, to keep the crit damage through the roof so you can kill most things with a single crit shot. I also rarely bother with elemental snipers, because they tend to have a lot less damage than your non-elemental Jakobs rifle.
The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk
09-28-2012, 02:34 PM
I duno about that, I have 3 elemental snipers right now, in fire, corrosive and shock flavours, and they're all pretty good. If you don't kill outright, then the elemental is enough to finish them off usually, at least with fire, and my corrosive fires so fast it's basically a machinegun. The shock is probably the weakest elementally, though it does have more damage than the others and almost no recoil, albeit at a slower fire rate.
EVILNess
09-28-2012, 05:41 PM
A fire sniper rifle is probably the most useful of the three elements, but it seems to me that the non-elemental guns have the highest base damage.
I have a rifle with 2000 base damage (And no scope, sadly) and a scoped rifle with 1300 damage and the closest damage I have seen on similar elemental damages is 900 or so.
I have just been using the 2ker at mid range for 12k crits and the 1.3ker for long range kills for 9k crits.

Actually I sold that weapon pretty much immediately, didn't seem all that great in comparison, unless it had some awesome hidden special I wasn't aware of.
Not that I need any more corrosives though, I found about 3 more corrosive snipers yesterday, one of which is pretty much double most stats of even my best fire sniper. Even on things that fire is suited best for now die even easier due to the sheer base damage and double elemental chance and damage, but it'll also work great on anything else too. It's my go to weapon now.

In other news, I have finally found a decent non-elemental sniper rifle. It's a Jakobs, of course. And I've started finding cool nades too, including a sticky longbow slag and a homing incindiary singulary that does INSANE damage. Still no sign of any transfusions though.
My other weapons now include a rapid fire incindiary shotgun with almost no recoil (low elemental proc chance, but I've buffed it up with a skillpoint, thank you Cataclysm tree) that also regens my health when stuff is on fire and a corrosive Vladof machinegun (I've gone through about 3-4 upgrades on these, because they are beasts) that literally eats Hyperion machines in seconds. I just came across this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijs-FEk3OIk&feature=player_embedded). I am now sold on the Mechromancer being awesome.
Have you watched Log 2? SHE IS A WOMAN OF SCIENCE AND ASSKICKERY.
NOT CHILDREN'S BEVERAGES.
Still, that is good cocoa.
Also, I can totally see why she ends up on Pandora. Giant death robot + science fair = probably running from the law.

Great news, everybody; The Mechromancer will be releasing a week early; that's TODAY across all consoles by the day's end.

Mechromancer stuff is bugged out on 360/PC apparently. Not seeing any issues on PS3, but back up your saves, people.
Mechromancer is also fucking amazing and my new favourite class. Someone help me levelgrind fast to catchup. :P

If you see me on (Treble) and I am playing Borderlands, then send me a message and I will load up my 33 Commando and kill Ducino's Mom a few times for you. You will get a level per kill until 13-14 and then its just massive exp.
If you see me on another game, send me a message and I will probably switch games and help ya.
I'm always willing to kill bosses to PL someone, cause the more people in the game the better the loot!

I really want to try out Mechromancer but I don't want to have to spend £10 to play her. From what I've seen of gameplay vids it does sound awesome, Ordered Chaos sounds really difficult though. There again I also need to hurry the fuck up and finish my first Siren playthrough and then try out Assassin and maybe Commando too, so, yeah, I need to get my arse into gear.
Also I read somewhere that apparantly Gaige chopped off her own arm and installed the cybernetic so she could more easily digistruct Deathtrap. So it's good to know she's as utterly insane as everyone else in the Borderverse.

I will be at the homestead around 5PM central US time.
I am actually at work on the ass end of a 12 hour shift. On the plus side, I got the weekend off.
So, just send me a message if I am logged in, which I think I am as I pretty much never close my Steam, so I can acknowledge you and then I will probably fire up Borderlands.
ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS TO COME IS WELCOME.

So, I was quite saddened tonight when Bloodwing died. I could tell something like that was gona happen all through that mission, but goddamn if that wasn't horrible. This game has really gotten much darker than the original. But then Nik showed up and we stole some booze for Mord, met Brick, shot a man in the face (he was asking for it) and helped Scooter write a love poem. That ended badly too.
... Yeah, so much darker.

Just quit out and go back. I glitched out at that skag puking it up; I couldn't grab it. I just reset my console, logged in and bam, all better.
