Here's another way to do speech bubbles. It's for Photoshop but maybe it can be adapted for the GIMP, or whatever you're using.

What size text are you using? I think it could stand to be a little smaller.

That's about the same, except that MY way gives curved talk indicators.

Also, for some reason with the GIMP, if you stroke a selection, it comes out a lot more aliased than if you stroke a path.

Edit deux: What you could do is create the selection, then convert it to a work path, to get a smooth stroke.
