What size text are you using? I think it could stand to be a little smaller.
That's about the same, except that MY way gives curved talk indicators.

Also, for some reason with the GIMP, if you stroke a selection, it comes out a lot more aliased than if you stroke a path.

Edit: Example! Low quality JPG, so it's not the BEST example.

Edit deux: What you could do is create the selection, then convert it to a work path, to get a smooth stroke.

Thanks for the tips guys. I would try them out now, but been visiting family all week and only just now got to a computer. I'll be sure to check them out once I get home on Sunday.

Basically, with the current font, Comic Book Commando, size 24 is where I normally fall. I can get the line spacing down to -5 to take care of the vertical threshold, but any character spacing that I lower, even by -.5, it just looks to squashed. My next projects are to get a more versatile font and to work on the tips you guys have given before the next scene is out.

Ultimately, use whatever technique that you feel comfortable in creating the speech bubbles.

As for the font, the actual size can be bumped down some, I think. Not just the leading/spacing.

Entirely possible! I could never find anything I wanted in GIMP, so it's all Greek to me.
