I hold that no one thing is good to hold you over. My personal mix is reading, writing, video games, and doing art. Taking a couple interesting summer classes if you can afford it is great, too, because you can learn stuff without it all coming down around your ears and it's on your own terms. Otherwise, volunteering can be rewarding.

Oh, I've also discovered that Perler beads can be a good, geeky diversion.

I always try to find something new to fail at. Last summer it was juggling. the summer before that was Knitting. the summer before that was sailing. before that was Coding. Something to both learn something cool and to do something awesome. This year I might try 3d modeling or learn some more on photoshop. But i still have a few weeks till my summer. Maybe by the end of the summer I will make a Model that I can place in Garrys mod. or make The Action Scientist comic...

Crafts are fun. I've recently discovered the joys of working with glass! I took a one-day class at the university art center a few months ago, and I hope to explore the medium further this summer.

A blowtorch, molten glass, a kiln full of burnination and limited safety equipment leads to surprisingly fun times. I now have a kickass round paperweight/ Palantir that I made in the hot shop kiln and a handful of beads I made on the torch. Sticking explosive sticks of glass into a flame the length of my hand while not wearing gloves is hardcore and awesome.

I'm also taking a tai chi class this summer, if all goes well.

I expect video games to take up the rest of my not-at-work time.

Well I'm currentely going to Portugal and Germany which I reckon will be warmer. mStill haven't sold me on the Finnish splendour.
