I think RM's Hadoyastopthis was much weaker then BM's Hadoken. Why?

Because BM's has had years of fine tuning the power and make it a more precide beam of love and death while Red Mage/Mime had no idea the sheer power of the spell. Thats why it went wild (like a fire hose with out a user.)

You have a good point Big Mac, but there is that small non-zero chance that somehow he thought it was pure power, so he forced it all into a single burst of energy.

That could be true. That being said, i doubt that RM would be able to do that even if he tried. The pure power knocked him back and he could not focus on the attack. That is why it was more of a blow attack, sonic boom perhaps, and not an intence beam.

It could be because of the class change, which seems to have made them stronger in addition to giving them new skills.

However, I always figured the flames appeared was because it was very close to the ground. Most of BM's Hadokens are very airborne. The idea of RM not having as much control is also very plausible.

Maybe a more realistic reason: As the comic went on, the comic got more detailed and prettier.

If you look at the hadokens cast by Black Mage, the beam usually looks rather short, as if it's immediately after he's cast it. Red Mage's is probably what the shot would look like after a moment longer. Hence, the lightning-fiery recoil becoming visible?
