Conficker is absolutely not a hoax. It exists, and is very well documented, and has been since frickin' October.

The mainstream media is not the only source of information on the planet, and they don't start covering things like this when they actually happen. The news is all about sensation. The reason you didn't see it mentioned until March 30thish is because before then it was boring to most people.

So don't call it a hoax when it has more evidence than you can shake a stick at.

It may be there, but it sure isnt doing a damn thing right now.

This makes it a bigger threat than the actually harmful viruses that are infecting just as many/more machines... how?

Well, for one it can be damned hard to get rid of, so if you're not fond of dropping the DBAN on a regular basis, that can be a bit of a downer. Especially from a corporate IT standpoint.

That and the fact that its purpose is so far unknown, which means there's the potential for it to be trivial or to be a very good botnet. Most people are erring on the side of caution, however.

I mean, it's nowhere near as bad as GhostNet is so far, but it certainly has the potential to be.

I never once said it was a hoax.

I said it felt like a running gag to make the stupid people sign off the internet.

Everyone who has even a basic-kept computer is protected from this. It's less of an issue then 419 emails.
