I bought the Annotated Alice and read that back in February, so this stuff is fairly fresh in my mind. I would say your source is mistaken, Aerozord: the Hatter is simply Mad, and not homicidal. And while the books are rather twisted, I dunno if they are necessarily very dark. Certainly death is mentioned quite a lot (Off with their heads! and such) as well as some of the humor being rather black, but I wouldn't define it as the overall tone of the books. Mostly they are about word play and logic and math. (All the sequences of the second book, for instance, are equatable with a game of chess.)

In any case, there have never been (and likely will never be) very true adaptations of the Alice books. For one thing, they are incredibly episodic, with no over-arching story, so movies tend to pick and chose episodes or elements from both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and mix them up in random order. So with that in mind, I'm not overly bothered by whatever Tim Burton feels like doing to them. It'll be fascinating to watch, I'm sure.

Anyway, it is way too early for me to make a decision about this. Some of the visuals and possible plot elements made me raise an eyebrow or two (something about an Alice-Hatter romance?). But for the most part it looks pretty nifty and most of Tim Burton's movies end up winning me over in some way of another. I'll see it.

I was pretty much going to say this, as Alice In Wonderland has always been one of my favorites despite the fact I am now 30. In fact my several copies of the book sit on the same shelf in my library with Hunter S. Thompson and Sun Tzu. Most people find my library to be exceedingly odd.

EDIT: As far as I have heard for the plot elements of the movie, this is actually supposed to be a revisiting of Alice. A 19yo Alice returns to Wonderland as an adult and faces off with the Red Queen.

There's an original concept.

I think that, as a culture, we need to leave Wonderland alone for about 50 years.

Well there have been SOME original takes on the world of Wonderland...

It just sucks that Frank couldn't get his Looking Glass Wars movie out before Burton decided to do his traditional Burtonrape to Alice....

I'd rather see Alice in Wonderland by Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton go back to Batman, just for the sake of proving that you can make a more colorful Batman movie than Joel Schumacher. Johnny Depp as Joker and Helena Bonham-Carter as Harley Quinn and it's as good as done.
I was actually alarmed that Helena Bonham-Carter wasn't in this movie. It seems like she fits into any role in any movie that could be even considered 'dark' or 'twisted' or 'other words also meaning those things'.

its based off of an established series. I think I'd be more upset if it was an original take. I hate when they adapt something and the names are about the only connection
