A Threat to the District

Basically, a group of 3rd graders got angry at their teacher and got together in an attempt to attack her, and possibly kill her. Police were alerted and no one was actually harmed. I feel that the kids were too young to actually understand what the consequences of their actions would be, they were only like 8 to 10, but what shocks me is how organized they all were, each having specific roles and things to bring. I think that odds are they wouldn't have actually attacked, but the level of organization also makes me think they would have. I do feel that they should definitely be punished, but I don't think that expulsion is the right thing: they are simply too young to understand the full consequences of what doing this would have caused. What do you think could have caused this and would the kids have actually gone through with it, what do you think should be done about it, and what do you think the kids were thinking?
