Default Chuck Norris for Texas President

Um yeah, apparently good ol' Chuck Norris has announced he would run for President of Texas when it secedes from the US.

Apparently some folks like Norris and Glenn Beck (where this comment first popped up) don't like the fact that the wrong kind of people are now leading the nation, so they wanna secede to establish their own nations lead as the Founding Fathers wanted it in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Of course the actual interview with Beck is even more outrageous than Norris's article for World Net Daily.

Quote:
From Glenn Beck's own transcripts:
GLENN: Chuck's the author of Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America. Chuck, you know what? I was talking about General Petraeus the other day. I mean this sincerely: I would love to have General Petraeus go up to Washington and clean that hornet's nest out. I'd like him to set up a military tribunal and call them in one by one, okay, going to have a little interview with you. Find out if they're guilty or innocent of being involved in, you know, all kinds of the scandals that are going on and kick them out.

NORRIS: I want to go with General Petraeus myself and be next to him and when he finds out who's guilty and, you know, dishonest, then I will take care of it for him. Took him out. I'll choke them out, the ones that he finds dishonest, I will choke them out and stick them into a pile.
So, yeah, any thoughts, comments, cuz right now I'm just kinda in awe of the sheer brazen wing-nut stupidity of Norris and Beck, beats anything Limbaugh throws out.

So... huh... military coups, then? Is that really what someone wants to get behind?

I don't have high hopes for this thread. Chuck Norris + Military Coup won't go long without... y'know.

But wow, the "wrong kind of people" leading the nation? I hope Bush was included in that statement, because as it is it sounds very, very racist.

Why do people even listen to Glenn Beck and his ilk? Honestly. It's like he got a BA in Retarded Bullshit Spewing.

Mainly wanted to discuss the fact that people like Glenn Beck and Chuck Norris have swung around from a viewpoint that equated opposing anything this country did to supporting terrorism, to a view that it'd be perfectly fine to secede or launch a coup to overthrow the democratically-elected government because they don't like it. Kinda reeks of hypocrisy.

I mean, it was noticeable when Democrats took Congress back in '06 - but ever since Obama was elected, holy shit.

^Problem is too many people take Beck seriously. I'm guilty from the left wing for even bringing him up here; but there's some on the far, far right that support what Beck's rooting for.

The Texas Constitution does contain components that would allow it to secede from the union. I would be very interested to see how such a move would be handled by Washington.

Is that something that Texans really want? I mean, it's one thing for Chuck Norris to talk about it, but it's another for them to actually vote for it and do it.

But the constitution of the US says that states cannot leave. In addition I believe that it is established legal precedent that in cases of conflict between the two, the US constitution supersedes state constitutions ( I could be mistaken about that, however). On top of that, didn't we kind of already fight a war over this? I know they think liberals are sissies, but do they really think the feds wouldn't have every gun, tank, and plane in the nation all over their shit in a heartbeat?

Actually, I say we war-game this scenario out in the thread, as I can't imagine there's anybody in this forum that will argue in favor of the Texas Ranger. I could be surprised, but I doubt it.

texas tried to secede once before, and the US didn't even need to take them back by force. they can leave if they want, they'll be begging to be let back in once the drug cartels move in in force.

This is absolutely true.

This is not true. The federal government is meant to tie all the states together, but the power balance between the two isn't as clear-cut as it used to be. Originally, state law took precedence, but after roughly the Civil War era, it's been much more ambiguous. Most of the time, it's not an issue, because state and federal laws tend to deal with different things, but as Texas was actually brought into the union from Mexico because of the large amount of American citizens in there, and was done so by vote instead of hostile takeover like Hawaii, and because it was its own sovereign nation before that, the agreement was that Texas is now the only state that can legally cede from the union and go back to being its own country.

However, the reason they wanted to become part of the US was because of monetary reasons in the first place, so good luck to them mining sand for income when they find themselves without any real resources.

The drug cartels would probably be the only thing to keep them afloat. Remember, as I just said, they joined the union for monetary reasons. Texas is not so rich that it can easily support itself without outside help in various forms.
