FRONT KICK OF DOOM!

So the last week was kind of eventful for protesting in America. 2,000 people went to protest by occupying Wall Street and hoping that people would make their voices heard in America.
I don't think it's failed, but it didn't go quite like they expected. 100s have been beaten and jailed while the demands are ignored. But what does this mean for protesting in America? Currently, IMO, people are "happy" so to speak. The difference of the US and Egyptian revolts was how disenfranchised the middle class had become from the decades long reign of their president. Right now, I don't think the protests have hit a boiling point. But what's amazing is how no one has heard of this protest. At all. It's been going on for days and yet I'm sure people haven't witnessed the police beating people for marching or coralling them into areas for no apparent reason. And why do we allow arrests for filming police officers? Last edited by Jagos; 09-26-2011 at 08:07 AM. |

The main difference between here and there being that in Egypt, a bad president was responsible for a lot of their problems, while here we've spent decades working on a model of economy hand-crafted to screw us over. Takes more than a simple regime change to fix that.

Pip, you do know that Mubarak was president for thirty years, right? And that he was the only candidate? I get that you're not entirely serious and all, but "a bad president" wasn't the source of Egypt's problems.
Oh, and the answer to Jagos' question in the thread title is no, didn't hear a thing until you brought it up. How about that.

I just read a short column about the arrests in a newspaper today, and I'm watching videos of it now. It's pretty brutal to watch the police force a man into a concussion just to make him compliant. Still, I can't help but feel kind of excited - this is long, long overdue, and I hope people will start to take notice.

The thing that stands out about how viciously these people are being beaten / peppersprayed / etc is how essentially ignorable they really very easily could have been, it's a small number of (as far as I'm aware) harmless, if annoying people. I can't imagine what the motivation was here except for people just really wanting to beat up DURTY HIPPEHZ.

I'm more angry that they're beating up protesters. Exactly what part of "freedom of speech" and "right to assemble" do the police NOT understand?
Seriously, they ought to turn right around and arrest themselves. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Fucking pigs. |

Police always beat up protesters. It pretty much like the basic job of police.
