Our immigration system isn't perfect but it really isn't meant to handle wave after wave of refugees like it did back in the Ellis Island days when getting here by boat was slow, many people died on the trip over, and we had lots of room and work for the people who survived the ordeal.

Anyway, I lost sight of my point a while back and I'm pretty sure I should have stopped typing somewhere around "I've got no problem with immigrants," but I'm only half awake right now and that center of the that makes these kind of judgments is still offline.

They all trying to make ends meet at their 3 jobs giving them little time and energy to congregate combined with brutal oppression by all sides and people's revolt are pretty much always crushed by the ruling powers- the US in particular wouldn't look kindly on one happening right next to them.

I get the feeling that illegal immigration isn't really a "solvable" problem and won't become one for, let's say 15 years, ballpark minimum. There are too many things that need to be reformed, not the least of which being a terribly tangled and perhaps deliberately inefficient system that will take a lot of time to wrestle with. On top of that, popular sentiment in and around the border states is such that supporting immigration reforms would be political suicide.

The only way to eliminate "illegal" immigration is to just let everyone go wherever they want. Which I support but is pretty much impassable as a bill.
As long as there is any kind of cap on immigration that cap is going to be filled up by wealthy educated migrants and those who are desperate enough that they need to migrate illegally (because they are dirt poor and live in violence and war) won't meet quotas, won't be able to wait for thesystem (cause they'll be dead) and will be overlooked in favour of the wealthy migrant.

Like I wasn't kidding, 'illegal' immigration continues to be the mess that it is because it creates a huge underclass that employers can exploit that has no rights and that politicians can demagogue against whenever they want to avoid talking about any actual issue.

It's especially horrorlarious in our brave new post-NAFTA world where we yanked out all the legal limits on where capital can go allowing it to flow freely over borders impoverishing communities and holding them economically hostage but then if labor acts to follow the flow of wealth being sucked from them back across the border we go all THATZ ILLEGAL YOU CANT DO THAT (well actually you can we just won't accord you any rights or legal status and continue exploiting you here on this side and then ship you back if you complain, hEh).

Because free market capitalism is for communists.
