Oh yes it does indeed ASK if you want to update. I also strongly suggest everyone does as I did and save the 1.7.3 jar file so they can still have fun with their mods
[edit] IMPORTANT DISCOVERY: holding shift and clicking the craft output will automatically craft EVERYTHING in the input.
In other words, got 8 coal and 8 sticks, with one click you now have 32 torches.

Like I don't wanna hate super hard on 1.8 because there's a ton in it that sounds interesting and/or is a much-needed improvement to minecraft but so much of it seems like stuff that has nothing to do with adventuring.
Adventuring will be interesting if/when experience does something, they come up with something other than trollmobs for people to fight (hey gais I put in a mob that poisons u ps thars no antedote heh hEh HeEehHh), and the villages actually have people and shit in them who maybe like, do something.
Also healing items now that food no longer heals.

Two things:

So now that 1.8 is officially out and people are playing it can anyone give me a clear, straightforward answer regarding whether minecraft handles new terrain generation on pre-1.8 maps the same way it does on maps newly generated post-1.8?

It appears to adjust to the new terrain generation style on pre-1.8 maps as it expands and creates new areas. If you leave to the point of map overwrite, the territory you return to becomes totally different.

But Fifth, it's OBVIOUSLY IMPOSSIBLE that 1.8 could have been written to support two different methods of terrain generation, as Minecraft itself does not do (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/The_Nether) in any way shape or form (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Skylands).

Because something having been done one way in a previous update doesn't actually guarantee that it will be done that way in subsequent updates? Because I've heard different things from different sources prior to the update's release and needed a definitive answer before I make decisions that will affect the overall structure of the server?
Nah, couldn't possibly be either of those, that would be like some kind of crazy-person thing that some crazy person would think.

No. You can't reproduce Ranger's death (rather, Ranger's wife's death, if I recall correctly), since the arrows simply fall to the floor.
Incidentally giving your enemies ammunition (not sure on that. I was able to pick those arrows back up, though.). (Zhuge Liang would be proud of you! After he's done making fun of you!)

So re: my earlier posts to doc I totally got all SIR, THOV HAS QUESTIONED MY MINECRAFT-HONOR, HARRUMPH, SIR, THOV, HARRUMPH but basically all I am trying to say is like really I don't ask a whole lot for running the server except that you all continue to be generally be good players and build pretty/clever/interesting stuff and have a good time, and I mean like I really honestly don't expect people to have to go out of their way to thank me for nothin' - cause I mean believe me if I expected you to thank me, I would tell you! I would be like HEY FUCKERS, THANK ME. (But for the people who did thank me earlier - thanks! that was really nice of you guys to say)
But like I do ask that you just like, generally bear in mind that the person who provides this server for minecraft and who has spent dozens if not hundreds of hours workin' on minecraft and researching minecraft all to provide you the player with more and better minecraft, probably knows a bit about minecraft, and if there is something I am askin' about regarding minecraft it is probably for good reason and done with a fair amount of prior thought regarding the topic of minecraft.
But so yeah really that's where I was coming from with that, Doc I'm sorry if that was a bit much and I hope there are no hard feelings.

anyway regarding when the server will update to 1.8(.1)
Basically at the moment we are waiting on Bukkit (http://www.bukkit.org) our modified minecraft server software, to update. I don't anticipate doing anything like we did with 1.7 where I just ran the server off of standard minecraft, because 1.7 involved like, MEGABUGZ and there was a straight week where the bukkit people couldn't even work on updating their program because they didn't know what was goin' on.
At the moment it's taken longer than expected but the bukkit guys are working on it. My personal guess would be there'll probably be something out tomorrow or this weekend. Anyone who wants to follow their progress themselves check out the bukkit twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/craftbukkit) or keep an eye on their changelog (http://ci.bukkit.org/job/dev-CraftBukkit/changes).
Incidentally one idea i'm vaguely kicking around is startin' up some kind of separate test server to run like, crashy versions of minecraft or test new plugins on before they go live, I'll probably let you know if/when I do anything like that (I may not let you know at all, I may choose to keep it TOPP SIKKRETT).

like uh... it is real super close to my bank, like... a two-block distance between structures. I was gonna ask you if it'd be cool to maybe move it over just like, a block or two, but then on the other side that puts you right on top of the walkway up to grim's place.
WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO DO THIS TOWER IN ANOTHER LOCATION, I do not know that existing structures make this a good location for new-tower placement. Get back to me!

ALRIGHT, FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, HERE'S MY POLICIES REGARDING TOWN SPACES:
1) KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID: It isn't that hard to create a structure that can satisfy all the needs of Survival Multiplayer that doesn't require hollowing out an entire mountain or digging a 20x20 hole down to the bedrock. Doubly so with the addition of community services like communal mineshafts, lava disposals, and resource farms. We only have so much space in the town center to spare, and I'd prefer to keep it looking semi coherent.
2) IF YOU MUST BUILD, USE YOUR BRAIN: Don't try to build a sprawling multi-z level superstructure in the middle of town. We have a shitload of map space and is it really too hard to explore around a little? If you happen to get into a misadventure while exploring, let the mods know and we'll try to help.
In retrospect, it seems stupid of me as an OP to update my game and thus cut off the town I'm running but on the other hand ADVENTURE!

I'll be quite honest with ya folks here on this one: 1.8.1 kinda renders a lot of fluff and flavor mods rather pointless and unnecessary workload tryin to fix. I'm currently runnin a small 'nilla server for some friends of mine and here's what I'd summarize as (not entirely needed but handy to have) things:
Permissions, yeahhh there's permissionsbukkit but that shit is so jacked up stupid it ain't worth using.
Disabling creepers.
Disabling endermen. Fuckers moving blocks pisses me off somethin fierce.
Other than that, setting a player on creative mode takes care of the whole unslightly-once-mountain-now-uglyass-eyesore-of-a-pit thing. I'm just waiting for the mod-API system to be implemented and I can shit all over that bloated system hogging pile called bukkit as a formal goodbye.

I was talking with Fifth the other day, what I want most of all, though I think you'd need minecraft itself to include it, is a way to easily handle mods and toggle which are on and off with those settings linked to a given world. I understand some mods have the ability to turn stuff on and off, but its not too user friendly and not all have it. Rather not have 5 copies of the jar file I have to keep swapping.
Even if that wasn't an issue I'd want it tied to the maps, so I dont have to manual change them every single time.

Endermen don't really seem very nightmarish imo :(
I don't know if it's a game bug or a setting (difficulty level?) or what but like they don't attack unless you hit 'em otherwise they kinda just hang around taking it easy and getting killed by water or sun or fire.
They don't seem to even teleport which is really lame.

My ideal setup is for Endermen to teleport but not aggro so like you'll look outside your window and see endermen out there and then they'll just be all up in your house going oh hey don't mind me, just thought i'd stop by and hang out, hope you don't mind if I pick up this block here.

I was assuming endermen worked as advertised. Saw video of them agro properly, though the teleporting not so much, which is abit of a killer since they are so big they cant really get to you otherwise

I havent found a mushroom biome in this or my other server, but if you want a giant mushroom, use bonemeal on a small one.
EDIT: makes a good insta-base. because skelies shouldnt be able to shoot up there and the ledge blocks spiders.

When Minecraft gets stabilized on a version for long enough, my server project will be to attach a broken chain to the side of a mountain, and a floating island a few chunks away with the other half of the broken links
Yeah, pressure pads. When put on top of fences, they lift you up like you are walking on a slab so it can be a little funny. I wish they would stay after if I removed the fences.

Here is my call of duty black ops pirate ship. It has the front view with a reflex sight and my clan tag on the flag. The side view is just the side. The one on top of the ship is the captains quarters. And the one in the basement is the dungeon.

Could be well possible with a shitload of pressure plates and redstone torches/pistons.
A pressure plate that's walked on sends a signal to either a redstone torch on a grid, or a grid of pistons.
Mind you, it'd be stupidly easy for "enemies" to avoid, but hey.

The food gathers neatly into your inventory if you step into the corner made by the glass and wall.
I have a different farm for getting eggs. These chickens come from a combination of breeding and egg tossing for the sole function of making delicious foods and feathers.
They can produce eggs that flush into the system or stay in the Ranch area, and you can pick those up as well, and they tend to pile up because the Ideal Chicken Density is much larger then what is shown in the demo pictures.

EDIT: Netherrack at the bottom of the pit! Pistons are then rendered optional, but I don't see why you wouldn't want to keep using those.
EDIT AGAIN: Hmm... Netherrack extinguishes when a piston moves a block directly above it and doesn't re-ignite (not sure why I thought it would, actually). =/ Shame.
In single-player, I guess you could use the Better Than Wolves mod and use its Hibachi block. That can be toggled on and off.

Oh man...I found out a fantastic way to clear out water.
First you build in a checkerboard fasion like this

I find building off or torches to be faster then off of dirt.
Then on the Small groups you place a single lava

and pick it back up (in survival) and it will fall and clear out all the water leaving you to continue onward

Fifth and I have both pretty much been telling people to do whatever the fuck on this map, so it's not really a matter of what works and what doesn't. That said, recall that Fifth does usually keep TNT turned off on the bukkitserver. We've had creative worlds where everyone had /item that worked perfectly fine.
For my part, I've just been underground netherportalling to get a bit of distance.
The pointed lavadouching is kind of douchey, but I'm not real committed to having a problem with it at this point.

currently i'm using the 1.8 edition of bukkit with the phoenix terrain gen mod enabled on an alt world.
edit: got a basic portal up from the default world to the phoenix gen world, should be easy enough to find from spawn.
I should really set phoenixworld to creative mode, hmm.
anyway i'm gonna be using this server to fiddle around until i've got a working bukkit install going again then i'll move that back over to the main server. Then this server will be for... idk, whatever i guess.

I played one of the older versions of minecraft on my old laptop and I just installed it on this one. however, every time I try to run it, it runs for about ten minutes before crashing and giving me a "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005)" error.

That's a Java error. Try reinstalling/updating Java and see if that fixes your problem.

It is a test server, so you can actually probably generally expect it to be pretty irregular. I will try to do a better job of letting you guys know when I'm shutting it down.

Okay so currently the deal is:
Main server is back to running Infernum! Ferny ferny fernum. Other worlds will follow.
Say goodbye to the junk world! It was junk, it's been junked.
For the time being, I am asking that you DO NOT engage in major exploration/new chunk spawning on Infernum, I'd like us to hold off on that until 1.9 when biomes will be fixed.
I am working out what to do about a creative world on the main server. If you want to dick around in creative mode go to the test server and take the portal near spawn to phoenixworld. Same rules apply as to the junk creative mode map, test server stuff may be gone at any time.
EDIT: Also /sethome and /home are currently enabled on the main server.
ALSO also the Nether is currently enabled for Infernum. Whatever nether is currently there should be considered temporary I'll be copying in the old Infernum map at some point.

I really don't like this new lighting system. And combined with the lack of a fog shortcut it makes seeing anything really difficult at times, especially in my deepest mines.

The fog you encounter way down at the bottom of the map isn't regular fog that you can adjust.
And the regular fog levels are adjusted directly in the menu

The void fog is cool and there's nothing you can do to get rid of it.

hear me out. I do like the realism, what it adds to the game, but its an "in practice" thing. You know how when you want to do work outside you pretty much always have to wait till day? Rain makes it so you have to wait even longer, because it keeps all the mobs alive. Unlike night you cant just sleep, but even if you couldn't it lasts so freakin long it can start raining before dawn, and rain through the entire day with absolutely no way to get around it. It turns your ten minute wait till dawn into a 20min, hey better luck next time
I bring this up not because I hate the idea of it, but because of how often I've been stuck in my house because it decided to downpour.

I dont have accidental fires often enough that randomly generating weather affects them. While tall grass is nice I find it visually displeasing, as for flowers, you sure? I never noticed it. But thats an effect of rain, you could just as easily remove the rain and apply its generation algorithm to flower/grass growth.
Though the rain itself isn't the issue. Its how freakin long it lasts and the fact it shuts down my activities. One reason it never puts out a forest fire is because why would I be messing with fire while its raining? i wouldn't mess with it inside my house (well no wooden part) and I wouldn't be running around outside period

yes but its not a challenge, its just a "put the game on pause" action. I have no issue dealing with monsters, I like a challenge. I dont find the rain more challenging, its easier then straight up night, I just find it annoying.
Just expressing my annoyance, obviously not a deal breaker for me, and actually I do like rain with finite water on. But in vanilla I just think it takes away more then it adds.
Endermen moving blocks is there too. Not really threatening, just annoying.

Next I'm gonna make one where the effective "ground" level is like, 12, and then cap the height it gens shit at to maybe 1t0.
Maybe tweak the ore generation to make it a little more prevalent, maybe make it so diamonds spawn only at the TOP of the map.
Yeah that could be something.
See if I can make a HUGE desert biome with like splotches of ultraoceanmountainsrainforest between them.

SO, apparently there is a pretty sweet mod that makes treecutting work the way it does in Terraria where you knock out the bottom block and they all come down. I'm leaning heavily towards installing that since trees with the bottom two blocks missing are a plague on existence but fully cutting down trees is a pain in the ass.
Also I'm probably gonna turn hunger on BUT I am also probably gonna put in some kind of like, make-trees-drop-apples plugin because I am a baby and I play Minecraft the babies way, non-babies who want to play minecraft for real can just not eat the apples I guess.
ALSO ALSO I am getting seriously to work on the city subway system! I would actually like to propose to convert the area under Town Square into a central transit hub, SHYRIA: let me know what you think about doin' this.

NatureOverhaul does both of those things. Allows you to topple trees easier and makes trees spawn apples and cocoa beans. It will also make saplings auto-plant and has settings that make trees and any other plant auto-die after a while.
I suggest going through and turning off all the auto-die stuff cause it gets resource intensive.
It also has settings for moss growth(Regular cobblestone to Mossy cobblestone when they are placed together), animal 'birthing'(spawning) rate and even climate specific growing rates.

Yeah, supposedly animal husbandry is gonna get more interesting/functional in 1.9, you'll be able to like, tame them and have them be persistent the way dogs are and such.

EDIT: I think what i'm most excited for in 1.9 is the prospect of a change to the rain sound, DEAR GOD let that finally be made tolerable to listen to.

Yeah there's an ongoing project to spiderproof it with extensions, you'll see them here and there, it's just a bit spotty.
It's not like spider invasions are a huge problem or anything so it hasn't been prioritized I guess.

Haha yeah I guess you are right up next to the fence, so. I built the fence up a little by you this morning and put some spidercatchers along the top, it's not complete but it should help.
