That said, everyone ought to be careful about putting flammable things near fire or lava anyway, since all that shit ends up being reset if we run on the standard server software between a Minecraft update and a Bukkit update.

Direct all issues ingame to Bit, if there's anything I personally need to deal with then you will probably want to remind me about it sometime this weekend or after when the massive storm of proposal work finally lets up.

It's been a while since I've done some Minecraft, so I might this up in a bit. My only concern would be accidentally doing shit where I shouldn't.
Just find a clear spot. The land close to spawn is largely spoken for, but just take a walk and you'll find somewhere in not too long. If you're unsure of an area, I can help you out.

Just look around anywhere behind the community center at spawn in fact. Not a huge ammount of building out there.

Maps should be cool, hatches might be all right, glad to hear he nerfed fire (maybe I can turn it back on now! MAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY BE). Nothing that makes up for breaking carts but oh wellz.
When I first heard "hatches" I thought "some kind of water control" which would have been awesome, but trap doors might be useful in some places, maybe. (also depends whether you can climb out of them using ladders? given the way ladders work now I am not 100% sure this will be the case)
Looks like he fixed the rail bugs that 1.5 introduced so that's a plus.
EDIT: REGARDING CLIENT/SERVER UPDATING:
Def. not gonna be updating the server this time until a compatible Bukkit update goes up so if you wanna play Fiendcraft in the interim do not update your client.

I'm just stunned by the lack of internal testing prior to the update.
I realize I'm being kind of harsh about it, it's just that somewhere in the multiverse of all possible universes there's a Fifth who thought it would be a totally rad idea to update right away to 1.6, and I can feel his headache from here.

On the other hand, there are games out there where such a thing might never be properly fixed. With Notch, I'm fairly confident it WILL get fixed. It might take a while (remember where leaves would not despawn? That took a while to get fixed), but it'll get fixed.

you paid for the complete game, just as a promotion for pre-ordering it you can play the beta. They didn't hide the fact you are playing an incomplete bug filled version of the game.

In fairness I guess Minecraft has been more or less is "feature complete" as far as the core single-player feature set. I mean it's not like wolves / lightning etc were things that needed to be added for the gameplay experience to be complete.

Yes, but Bukkit is third-party.
There's currently a bug in 1.6.4 that basically puts an immense load on the CPU, and that hurts even vanilla multiplayer*, but I don't see how Bukkit comes into it here.
*Except for, apparantly, the server Nikose's currently playing on.

One interesting bug right now is a lighting issue, where it doesn't update correctly when you're breaking blocks as time passes. you'll get these big incorrect spots of utter darkness.

I found the reverse: I was exploring with the map out in the night and I found a tree which seemed to be glowing. Its leaves would "break" but still be there ( I got like 3 sapling from the same leaf block ) until I hit another leaf block on a nearby tree...Which made it all go back to normal.
Also, maps 1) Don't show my buildings and 2) have no way of selecting a zoom level that I know of.
They're not very useful this way.
Edit: Okay, yeah, apparently you can't select zoom. Still the first problem, though.

UPDATE FROM BUKKIT.ORG
As I'm sure we're all aware, Mojang released Minecraft 1.6 today (Thursday, May 26, 2011) around 5AM EST and we've been hard at work getting a build out that is compatible with Minecraft 1.6 out. Since the release, Minecraft has seen quite a few small bugfix updates addressing some unnoticed bugs and we've pretty easily kept up with them. Unfortunately, there appear to be some issues with the update that is making the game unplayable for SMP players, so we've decided to wait for a bugfix update.
Will there be a CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6?
Given the reports of showstopping bugs present in 1.6, there's a high chance a new bugfix update for Minecraft will be out tomorrow or even several times this week. As a result, it is unlikely we will be releasing a Recommended Build for 1.6 until we have something stable to work with.
As a result, we recommend everyone stay on 1.5 for a while until the showstopping issues are fixed and we can get a new, stable, compatible build out.
You can already get CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6.4, but it is unsupported and not recommended.
I'll be scouring the internet for further reports on how Minecraft 1.6 is performing, but preliminary research and our own testing has revealed it as unplayable due to chunks sporadically loading or not loading.
So we'll see what happens with MC over the next couple days, then if things stabilize then the bukkit team will go to work on their thing, then once that's done Fiendcraft updates.
From what I understand the preliminary Bukkit builds mentioned above are super-broken, like, portaling crashes the server, so not even trying to fiddlesticks with that.
edit: SINCe this looks to be a prolonged period of non-updatement, contact me if you've upgraded and would like a FULLY LEGAL, 100% NON-PIRATEY downgrade option.

Update on bukkit
Update 3:
New development build b817 with Minecraft 1.6.6 support is now available.
Multiworld is STILL DISABLED (this does not include built-in nether portals). We are working on fixing it.
This is a non-recommended development and test build. You will not receive support outside of bug reporting. Backing up your server and completely understanding the risks of running this build is highly recommended before you run it.
Once again, we cannot guarantee that this build will not completely corrupt your world or cause a disturbance in the force.
Basically waiting for a stable/"recommended" build, or at minimum a build that actually supports multiworld play, before updating.

I went with more of a simple and clean looking approach than I first though of since I kind of have this image of you in my head of you being a no frills/nonsense kind of guy. Plus I was having trouble adding anything without making it look too busy.
I still have a couple of ideas of things to add, but like I said, having trouble not making it look busy. If I could get this damn unhappy face to look how I want it to look I am going to put it kinda centered on the AF. I was also thinking of putting some flowery fancy cursive writing under the CRAFT in that blank area to offset the simple lines of the text and bird. Not sure what to write though. Maybe a slogan of some kind?
If you can think of anything that might need to be added to it let me know.
EDIT: Thoughts on a background as well?

The server being down underscored that it would really be preferable to have a web page of some kind set up for the server for like, status and info and suchlike. Talked to my hosting company and worked out how to do this.
For now you can get at the web site via the server IP address, http://67.222.156.70/. I'm gonna get a domain name registered, once I do you'll be able to use that for the website and also in minecraft to get on the server.
Right now the web site is an extremely simple affair indicating our current server status but I'm def. gonna come up with something less ugly once I chisel open the part of my brain where the CSS lives.

Basically the way powered rails are set up right now under MinecartMania is that using them as launchers (IE from a dead start) will start you off kind of slowly but using them as boosters (IE you run over one with a bit of momentum already) should get you pretty much up to full speed, although as Doc said the boost may be less durable than traditional double-stacked cart boosters. SO you'll still have to lay down additional powered rail segments but it shouldn't be that often or anything.
And yeah I don't know anything about how maps interact with multiworld stuff. :(

Ideas for Fifth's website!
1. An email account specifically for Fiendcraft would be a good idea. It would allow you to add a centralized place for white-list requests and general fuck-upery reports that wouldn't go down when they migrate servers on NPF. It at the very least would make a good back up system.
2. Setting up something simple like maybe a blog (?) where you can announce planned downs and upgrades and such and maybe have it to where people can comment. OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS tend to get lost in the everyday discussion on a forum.
3. Stay on NPF for the general discussion. I can't really think of a better way to weed out potential griefers than making them have an NPF account.
I can't think of anything else.
I am not, no where near as helpful as I thought I was going to be.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the font I used for the logo was narkisim in case you want to be anal about matching fonts.

I was actually totally gonna ask this cause I'm fiddling around with recoloring it. Although as it turns out it matches up real close to Albertus so that worked out.
My major design plans for the site as of right now are pretty much "shamelessly rip off npf color scheme" because... it's the best color scheme, da-doy.
IDK if I'm gonna set up email for it or not, maybe. A blog will happen if/when I implement any kind of actual blogging software, like Wordpress or whatever, which is beyond the scope of my ambitions right now (IDK if my server even has php set up).
Content will probably be mostly the stuff covered in the OP. I'm thinking like, a page for the rules - gonna expand the rules a bit when I get the chance, I have enough of an idea of the particulars of minecraft to specify things beyond "don't be a dick".
Be nice to have some kind of gallery / galleries where I can put up like, screenshots of cool shit people have done. And maybe like... a "claimed areas" section so like if people have an area they don't want nobody else building in I can put it up there.
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... a calendar or something would be good, something to mark when updates / tinkering is gonna happen. Maybe a list for like upgrades under consideration.

Try across the water near the big tower at spawn. There is huge clumps of unclaimed land.

I'm pretty comfortable with this.
Like you shouldn't NEVER have to throw down a powered rail to keep you moving but having to put one every 12 blocks or whatever the current baseline is, or having to put down one every three blocks to get uphill, is ridic.

As a rough list:
Permissions - the thing that lets me set who has access to what
Commandbook - the thing that enables /spawn and /i
Multiverse - the multiworld portals plugin
Multiinv - controls interworld inventories so when you go terra > ely, your inventory gets saves so you'll still have it when you come back to terra (not perfect, still better to chest your stuff before going to ely)
Blocksonglass - allows torches to be placed on glass
Firecontrol - switches off fire spreading/damage
Minecartmania - increases power of booster rails
(not currently active) timeshift - permaset time for given worlds
(not currently active) epiczones - allows zone-based build protection, blast protection, health regeneration, some other odds and ends
Naturalgiants - spawns giants on monsterworlds
Wolfspawn - if your wolf dies it respawns at the world spawn

You'd first need to dig down ten blocks (actually, just 5 blocks? Regardless.) to fit the pistons, which you first need to make (and they'd need to be sticky pistons too!) and then there's the logistics of fitting all the redstone in the shaft to actually power the pistons.
I'm not saying it can't be done, but probably only on small scale. No grand, 40 level elevators.

I just realized a potental lethal trap. Have them fall into a pit, at the bottom of which is a pressure plate that causes a piston from above to drop onto them.

Think of this maze as one of those ancient tombs where there are hidden doors, adventurer squishing traps, trapdoors, and arrows coming out of the walls (dispensers could to that)

actually I was working on one, I even carved out a giant 100x100 block underground room for it

I once had a thread bookmarked that suggested being able to create entities out of structures you've built. Somehow.
Basically, you'd build the block that would make all attached blocks into entity blocks.
These blocks would have physics attached to them, allowing them to sink or float depending on their density, buoyancy and weight. It also specified things like drag, and whatnot.
It would, essentially, allow you to make actual (sailing) ships.
But damned if I can find that thread again. As well, it's obviously only a thread for suggesting things...

Speaking of which, CitizenS, try it again when you get a chance. I can't find any new permissions file in the current bukkit folder, so I updated an old one with you in it. Not sure which one the server is current running out of.
SPEAKING OF WHICH: Fifth, should I be messing with stuff in "bukkit766" or in "bukkit818?" 'Cause I can't find permissions files in 818. If I don't hear back from you, I'll just try adding one later.

So, I got a newbie's question about redstone circuits.
OK, backstory time. See, I decided to make some close-to-base defenses to kill off Creepers that are hanging around the exit to my personal mine in the early morning. So, without any bows or string with which to make Arrow Dispensers, I decided to make a Redstone-triggered punji pit , except with cacti instead of the sharpened bamboo that doesn't exist in Minecraft.
So I built me a 2 X 10-odd pit, filled in at the top layer with trapdoors, with Cacti beneath that level. A ring of Redstone dust around the perimeter opens all the trapdoors when I hit a pressure plate inside my base.
Now, my question is: can I make the pit any wider (say... 3 X 10) and still have Redstone circuits attached to each trapdoor?
If not, is there a good way to funnel monsters into a wider pit which does not have trapdoors going for it?

Tried again about 30 min ago, didn't work. And also, is there any way to get out of the snow awakening world between Ely and Terra? I wanna see the rest of it!

They changed the way permissions works, instead of a file for each world, there's a folder with separate user/group files inside it.

Side note: I invited two of my young cousins to play on the server. Well I say cousins, that's just like, what people in Pakistani families call everyone who's a friend of the family, we're not actually related, fuck I don't even know them that well. ANYWAY, their names are uh, Ultimatesomething and Killersomethingelse, I guess, be nice to them, let me know if they're being dumb.

I have a mine in arcanos covered with a glass roof. If I log out standing on the floor of the mine under the glass roof then I sometimes log back in standing on top of the roof.

Also in the same mine there is a lighting glitch. It renders as sunlight (which it should due to the glass roof) most of the time, but sometimes it renders as pitch black. As far as mobs are concerned, unless i put torches up there it is always pitch black, day or night.

small scale it might work but I'm betting a bunch of those would be a real strain on the server

Unfortunately mods that involve like, custom blocks and things don't really translate to multiplayer since like, to work, you'd have to have some kind of mod to the server AND THEN some mod that everyone playing on your server is required to install client-side, at least as far as I can gather. And people don't seem to be interested in all the hassle of setting all that up!
If they were I totally would have added tons of shit like that by now, pistons, the Aether, those derpy as fuck lookin' dragons, all kinds of crazy things.

And let's not forget that that mod shouldn't be multi-player enabled... maybe somebody made a bukkit compatible version, but I'm not sure of that.
As well, the original has been abandoned, but has recently been picked up by another modder (Kaevator (you may know him by his SuperSlopes mod)).

Oh I'll be playing on the server again now that I stopped playing Steam for long enough to remember that Minecraft can be played in-browser. The game didn't crash on me so I call it a successful test.

Interesting stuff on the notchblog about 1.7/1.8.
Basically 1.7 is going to be pistons only, all the "adventuring update" stuff is gonna get offloaded to 1.8.
1.7 should be coming "soon", going by experience presumably that means end of this week / sometime next week, but that's just my personal guess.
1.8 sounds... interesting, stuff to be included looks like
new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.
I'm kinda pumped for NPC villages, especially if there's mechanisms for creating your own as the server admin.

if that video is any indication this mod was when wolves were first introduced and the mod creator found it to be rather lacking update and just to prove it he showed all the things Notch could have developed for the game instead.
And I do admit ways to mass cook and netherack recipes alone would get alot more mileage then a single friendly mob that kills itself half the time

you mean to say wolves are awesome, and thats fair enough to say. Like when humans first domesticated we love the idea of taking a wild animal and making it our friend. But minus the emotional aspect of the game wolves didn't add much. They are mobs that will help defend you but even ignoring the issues of maintaining them that is absolutely all they do.
Do not be blinded by their cuteness, thats how Gremlins started
