You take all the current missions you're doing and so do your partners. If they have any you've already completed, they'll appear on your list as "Done" or something like that but you still can help them do it. If they have any that you haven't taken yet, it can be shared(I think, been some time since I've played). You don't all need to complete every objective(Say, it's one of those "Assemble weapon X" missions, if someone gets 2 parts and someone else get the other 2, it's done) but you all must stay in the same area(Attempting to change area will take everyone with you).

Theoretically you could have a 4-man party split in two groups and have each complete a different mission although I never tried that before...could be interesting.

Also, I'm trying to level up Mauve to a point where she'll be comparable to the rest of the Champions NPF Superteam, and yet again, gathering the freaking Purple Gang costume is a pain in the ass. It seemed easier the first time I ran though it with Lefty. I just keep killing mobsters left and right and none of them are kind enough to leave me the one peice of the outfit I actually still need. Jerks.

I have free MMOs from you-- I haven't even scratched the surface of Spiral Knights and Champions, and haven't started downloading any of the others. I have a crapload of new PS2 games I haven't finished (finally found a copy of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness!). I just bought Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney for the DS and am almost finished with AA: Trials and Tribulations.

I don't need any more new games!


AND THEN ALONG COMES STEAM'S SUMMER SALE, and now I'm staring at the front page advertising Killing Floor and Monday Night Combat for less than $10 each. (I missed Borderlands and Magica's sale days) It would be so easy to buy cheap new multiplayer games on Steam (and maybe have them downloaded before Christmas thanks to slightly-less-shitty internets) BUT I ALREADY HAVE ALL THOSE UNPLAYED GAMES. Raaagghh Steam, why do you put me in these moral dilemmas?!

So anyway. What's Killing Floor like? I get the feeling MNC is Team Fortressy, but it looks kinda fun.

And are there any other games on Steam I should keep an eye out for, should they go on sale in the next few days? The Madness may come over me and force me into a game shopping spree at any time, you know.

Edit: I'd considered looking into the Mass Effect franchise, but apparently ME1 doesn't always get along well with Vista 64. Same deal with Bioshock.

Monday Night Combat is somewhat of a cross between Ratchet & Clank arena modes and Team Fortress 2, but slightly more hedonistically themed (and oh god the host's jokes are terrible). It's pretty fun.

Killing Floor is something very... different from the norm besides the fact that it's an FPS. It's a lot of fun if you can get a good group.

It's basically running around from ever-growing swarms of increasingly threatening mutants/zombies. You have different perks you can level up and different gear you buy that'll go with the that perk, and climbing levels makes easier to buy, do more damage, etc. etc.

Kinda lame to play alone, but once you get a good group the game starts to liven up more because the swarms increase in size by a LOT. And once you get a decent level on perks the game get a lot more into specialization and who's playing what.

Or at least that's my view on it... having almost 150 hours may make me a bit biased. >.>

Now with that out of the way, Killing Floor is a pretty fun game but you have to be really committed to playing it, since it takes a lot of playtime to level up the classes/perks (they call them perks but they are basically classes).

Monday Night Combat is pretty awesome. It has the classes of TF2, the AI "creeps" marching down lanes like a DotA-esque game, and some tower defense thrown in for kicks. Had I known what the game was like sooner I would have totally payed more than $3 for it.

Finally, Mount and Blade Warband is fucking amazing. I literally can't get enough of this game. At first I was planning on being all noble and great, and then I did some mercenary work for the Swadian King and learned how awesome and profitable pillaging can be. And now I swore fealty and have my own fiefdom (although the asshole King gave me the town that was just raided by an enemy faction so I can't earn revenue from it yet). Now I just need to build up an army, find (or train) an engineer, and then it's time to lay siege to a castle to take for myself.

So, in the past few weeks I've been playing this MMO called Forsaken World, made by the same folks who run Perfect World. Yes, it's on Steam. It totally counts.

Anyhow, it's sort of a grinder to be honest. Despite all the EXP Aids the developers throw at you, it still takes forever to level up once you hit around level 25 and the gap keeps increasing at a much faster rate than the EXP Gains do. The EXP needed to go from level 33 to 34, for example, is just under 920k. 34 to 35? 1,262,000 or so.

It's also an open world MMO with a very high Twenty Bear Asses-type quests to Actually Pretty quests ratio, though my definition of "Actually Fun" is skewed towards the Instance-based design used by DDO so as far as I know this is normal.

The big reason I'm playing it is because of a small group of people on ponychan, really only about three or four people other than myself, were playing it and looking into making a guild for those on the site who are also playing it. As far as I'm aware though, none of them have the time for the game anymore, which is a bit of a shame.

=/ I'm unsurprisingly desperate for any kind of social interaction, really. It's something I've come to realize I seriously miss in my life, no matter how bad I've been at it in the past.

Killing Floor is all right. It's a fine time with a good group like Lazy mentioned, but I find it got really samey really fast. Pretty much identical wave structure of mutants, always, so once you find a place/build that works for you, you can't really lose unless you screw up royally.

They do have this sandbox mode thing to customize waves, but using it disabled XP gain, which is the only other reason to even play the game.

Monday Night Combat is pretty fun but I only found its art style to be very similar to TF2. It might be a fun game for NPF nonetheless. Tongue-in-cheek futuristic FPS/Tower Defense.

There doesn't seem to be a way to link it to the supergroup, however, I can invite 10 people to it. I don't know if you guys can access it if I am offline or not, but I sent an invite to everyone in Nuklear Power Fighting Union Unleaded to check if it was a permanent invite, or if it turns out I could invite people when they were on at the same time as me.

Did I mention I'm a sucker?

I just figured out how to get to the "Crisis" areas. Maybe I'm just an idiot that I never tried the helicopter in front of the superjet.

On a more useful note, I've noticed that I have yet to hear any of these audio ads that people are complaining about. The way I figure it, it is because I listen to music through the music option. When you log in, hit the Champions icon next to the minimap, and select "music". It used to let you choose between winamp and iTunes, but I don't know what does now. When you click that, it eliminates most of the background noise so you can hear your music better. And it appears that the audio ads count as "background noise".

No but at the moment you're more or less standing in line at the register.

It is extremely frustrating to someone who already has a bosh internet connection to have to deal with over-taxed servers. Why not use download slots, or increase the number of servers, or capture pigeons to fly a hard copy of a game to a customers home? Anything would be faster than a program that literally stops downloading your game because too many people are trying to download theirs.

The system they have now is servicable, but inefficient.

I've bought games during huge steam sales before and have had like 8 hours tops on the download. Never even one day, much less four. And really, it doesn't even take the full 8 because the speeds increase on 'off hours' if you just leave it go.

...No it doesn't. Internet connectivity DRM is pretty prevalent and much more invasive on off the shelf games than Steam games.

Further, Steam actually does let you play without an internet connection so long as you log in once every so often and switch it to offline mode. I've sat playing dragon age/FO3/NV/other steam games when my internet was down for hours.

Good heavens, just when you thought Beat Hazard was the game most likely to induce a seizure before, they go and add MORE FLASHING COLORED LIGHTS.

All told, I managed to get out of this steam sale fairly intact. All I bought was Frozen Synapse, and some DLC for Gratuitous Space Battles, and the above mentioned Ultra DLC for Beat Hazard, plus what I got for tickets.

I was annoying and drunk and you guys all left to play a Killing Floor. Why anyone would want to play with a murderous floor is beyond me. Some sort of advanced "The Floor Is Lava?" Though, that seems pretty deadly by itself in game form.

In response to being a sneaky sneaky Pyro in TF2, I play a lot of CTF. Two Fort. You know, that one, really awesome map that's not Point Capture? Well I play that. And when you guys decide on a map that's not 2Fort, I get confused and wander around aimlessly (Just like in real life!) trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do. I literally stumble upon people. And I stumbled upon a certain Sniper in Steel.

It's a fine map but for TF2 vets it's sort of stale. Back near the launch it was almost constantly played.

With the PS3 version having no patches or updates whatsoever, it really is the best map. I spent a few hours there this morning messing around with a Sydney Sleeper, and a Pyro, and it was great fun.

There's a great thing about 2Fort and that's about nothing at all.
The problem is, there's only so many ways to get to the Intel, you can stagnate the game with just two engies, and you repeat the exact same strategies about 500 times to accomplish something. It's great to do one thing. Practice. Otherwise, it's time to graduate to the good maps Seil. :)

Making well organized "fronts" for two teams to battle on is really the butter of good multiplayer FPS, and goes beyond TF2. Some freedom is okay, but having highly predictable areas of fighting always makes a better game. And all the more awesome when you can find a way to get the jump on people.

Edit: I agree with Jagos above that the Intel seems ridiculously defendable in 2fort, which kind of turns 2fort into a Deathmatch server. But that isn't *really* a bad thing. Also I've personally witnessed a Heavy using only the Boxing Gloves of Killing get the Intel with engys defending, so, all is not lost.

Engineers can be countered with good spies. It's a solid map that's a little overplayed, but with good reason. It's best with a good group of people, with a strong list of pros for every class. It's a good map.

Saps your sentry? Shoot him/wrench him. All classes have a unique 'placing sapper' animation, so if you're paying attention, you'll see who slapped the sapper.
Tries to shoot/stab you while sentry sapped? Dodge while unsapping sentry.
Tries to stab/sap? Watch your back. But this is the only method that really works solo, especially if the engie is distracted by other people attacking.
Tries to Ambassador snipe? Wrangler.
Tries to telefrag? Don't stand on your teleporter. :eek:

Obviously, if you can co-ordinate with a team member to sap as they simultaneously attack, that's much better. But that's why the game is called TEAM Fortress 2.

So, a while back my Steam simply went Kaput, and i lost all my downloads. Barely had the balls to re-do them until now. 9Gb for TF2 and 12Gb For L4D2... wuck.

But, that is done and in the near future i'll be back to cripple any team i'm a part of by Awkwardly positioning Turrets! ...or by Tossing furniture around if you guys decide to be awesome and play Halflife 2 Deathmatch.

On a related note... i just ended up getting Spiral Knights and War Inc. So i'll be joining you guys on those too. Now, i see many of you play Spiral Knights, but i don't see any of you playing War Inc.

So i went ahead and played it to check it out...

It's actually quite a fun little game. It's free, not very heavy (not top notch graphics either), it's your standard Online PvP FPS, except it's a 3rd Person shooter and there is a Level and class system.

As you battle you get more Xp that lets you earn new skills (like move faster, have more ammo, 5% less damage from explosives, that sort of thing) and every time you win you get cash that lets you rent gear and weapons (you start with 10k and the daily rent of a good weapon is around 1k, if you're good you can get more than that in a good hour of play)

The game also lets up to 32 players in 2 teams fight it out, and you can create sealed rooms with passwords, so no intruders. However, the game does not have native voice chat support.

it's a 1.2Gb download, i suggest you guys to check it out. Might be a fun alternative if you are looking at a more realistic Shooter to goof around online.

Spiral Knights has PvP now, and Brink is having a free to play weekend (I'm assuming in celebration of the new DLC they releases). I'm kind of glad about Brink 'cause now I can see first hand if it's as horribly terrible as some people claim it to be.

I tried War Inc. I didn't find it too amusing honestly, but then I also don't like 3rd Person Shooters on PC's so you may want to try it out yourself.

Guess what? I finally got a server working, it's really easy actually.

Anyway, my connection isn't the best and people have pings of at least 100, sometimes going over 250 so can anyone with a good connection try to set up a server? If my laptop can run BOTH the game and server just fine (that is, the server was working just like if I use my desktop PC for it and my laptop for the game), one of you should have a badass computer to do it too.

If you want to try it, do this:


Go to the tools part of your steam library
Download the Source Multiplayer Dedicated Server
In your modem/router's firewall settings, add this ports:
TCP: 27015, 27020-27039
UDP: 27015-27020, 1200
Do what post #2 says (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=831822)
Start the server
Add a pass in the player password to avoid non NPFers

I am going to make it a habit to get an early game of killing floor done as soon as the clock strikes 9 EST (or very close to) before we all do our usual thing of TF2 and the rest.

So yeah, people interested get on by 9 EST please. (ie, the time the steam night is suppose to start.).

Not if grenades are affected by gravity the same way that Huntsman arrows and needlegun ammo are. They're ... depressingly ineffective in low/no/high gravity because their trajectory arc is changed, and Huntsman Sniper can't fire at all when he's in air or hovering around in noclip.
