How do I join the server?
Do you mean me server that's filled with silliness and OP weapons? As long as it's up, anyone can join using the 3 letter password that you should know about. If you don't know it, shame on you D:.
Also my steam is working just fine :/
The server will be online if people ask for it, right now that means, mostly on the NPF weekend nights.

Not if grenades are affected by gravity the same way that Huntsman arrows and needlegun ammo are. They're ... depressingly ineffective in low/no/high gravity because their trajectory arc is changed, and Huntsman Sniper can't fire at all when he's in air or hovering around in noclip.
It also hurts weapons that are reliant on splash damage or just being able to use surfaces for any reason in general, so soldiers and demomen have a hard time dealing damage without some amazing accuracy, and everyone's speed and mobility takes a hit while in the air, leaving scouts vulnerable.
The heavy, however, mostly just continues on as normal. Except airborne. He can't eat sandvich when in the air, though, so there's that.

I play on low grav all the time. That's the easy part.

I might be on, if I can stop being economically stressed out by Recettear long enough to play something else.
I mean, fuck that fairy that will only pay less that 110% of base price, fuck that con artist that tries to sell me ridiculously expensive crap for even more ridiculous prices. Fuck that one rival girl for not showing up enough to buy all of my expensive shit without complaint. And fuck those people that keep selling me expensive fruit as soon as my profit starts building up.

You should have avoided the con artist...
The fairy, go for 105% first, then slowly work your way up with her.
Make the place extremely gaudy for your rival to show up.
And start with 95% as a general rule.
Arcanum
08-25-2011, 02:32 PM
I have a rule when it comes to Recettear: If you don't like my prices or my offers, you can go fuck yourself. Considering I'm making consistent profit while meeting payment deadlines, I think it works rather well.
But seriously, fuck that little girl who comes along, wants to buy one of the most expensive things in my store, and then is like "oh no I don't have enough money, hahahaha I'm wasting your time." Suffice to say she doesn't get much from my store, but she still keeps coming back and I hate her.
Aldurin
08-25-2011, 02:52 PM
I really hate it when I get a bunch of shit when most everybody's budget is lower than that, sort of like getting that vase worth 21k during the first week.
For price fluctuations, I love them and hate them. When the value of something goes up and I already have a ton of it, I can easily double my weekly goal, but then if the price goes down I have to resort to stockpiling cheap stuff from every category so that I don't get screwed too hard when people come in and request that item.
And fusion is awesome early on, when I first gained access I was able to make two Azure Necklaces and sell them for a nice profit to that rich girl.
For adventurers I already have the thief and the mage in green robes, but I don't want to waste half a day on a weaker dungeon just to level them up. Do you have any strategies or preferences, or should I go Louie all the way?

08-25-2011, 02:58 PM
I'll be moving this weekend, so you all will be without "Flare Finds Random Crap." entertainment. Sorry. Hopefully I can also get my computer up and running with a new power supply so I can play again too.
Specterbane
08-25-2011, 03:05 PM
Good luck Flare, at least you will be without the hurricane we've got out east.
See, with Recettear I tried selling at reasonable prices (110%-115% being the highest I'd go usually) and I kicked ass, many times having enough left over after making a payment to pay the next payment if they would've let me. The key to that was to take advantage of crafting items and the larger store size you get by jumping levels so damn quick.
Aldurin
08-25-2011, 05:13 PM
I would always start at 125% for anyone I knew wasn't unreasonable (generic man will take that price, and many people usually will too, and if they don't then just drop to 115%) and then go 130 for the Guildmaster and that rich girl.
The guy in charge of the merchants guild is the true loser in this deal, since he'll come in and order two weapons two days later, so the next day I go buy 2 weapons from him which I then sell back the next day for a really nice margin.
It's puzzling how I'm expected to pull millions from such a small town, especially perplexing when adventurers buy items that cost ten times what I pay to hire them. Oh yeah, adventurers lose on this deal too, since they spend what I paid them on stuff I found on their adventure.
Aldurin
08-25-2011, 06:48 PM

Aldurin
08-25-2011, 07:51 PM
It's like 11 bucks for the whole thing, I'd buy it but after finding out I need to build a gaming computer before I can play Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I'm reluctant on the offchance I'd have to wait to play it.
I might be on, if I can stop being economically stressed out by Recettear long enough to play something else.

Arma, Prime and Little Girls are the only troubling ones. Go for 103% with them. Don't make your shop too gaudy and you'll avoid the scammer most of the time(And won't make Louis ashamed of browsing your store). With everyone else, go wild, 110%-125% and double that for Red Items(Half for blue, of course).
Unless the costumer asks for a item that isn't on the counters, then you're screwed and need to sell it for around 70%. Always keep a small stock of the cheapest item of each type for such occasion.

Restart your game. NEVER go to the town square during the afternoon and meet her. When you get $100K in pix, that's when you avoid the center like the plague. Nah, I'm already too far in to want to restart now, I'll just give her the standard "fuck you" 1 pix offer whenever she stops by to bullshit.

Shit son, what til you deal with him on hard, AKA "I don't care what attack you're doing, I'm gonna grab you anyway, hit you with the shoryuken, and then Zangief piledrive you because fuck you, that's why."
Or his stupid "become a part of me" ultra. Yes, it is easily avoided if you're able to jump over him the second he hits it, but good luck being in a position to do that when he breaks it out on medium or higher.

The zombie DLC is just a few extra areas, some extra quests, and a few extra bosses, non of which are hard. It's kind of "meh" overall, so I don't really recommend it.
Moxie's Arena gives you 3 or 4 (I forget) arenas to fight in. You can get bonus skillpoints by beating the arenas, but they are a huge pain to do solo. Also any kills in the arena don't give you EXP, nor do they increase your weapon proficiencies. It also gives you an item bank to store your items. If you really want an item back, grab this, otherwise I don't recommend it.
Knoxx's Armory is pretty fantastic. It gives you a few new areas, new vehicles, some awesome boss fights, increases the level cap, AND has a crazy post-end-game boss that takes either a shitton of patience luck and skill to beat, or a very good team. It also introduces new super duper rare "Pearl" items, that are allegedly better than Orange items. The only downfall is there's only one fast-travel beacon, so you'll spend a decent amount of time driving on these elevated highways between areas, but the new vehicles kind of makes up for that. Totally recommend this.
I don't have much to say on Clap Trap's Revolution since I never got around to playing through it all the way on my 360.
Aldurin
08-29-2011, 02:12 AM
It's fun, but very slow paced, and the constant enemy respawn gets really annoying when they're at such low levels that it isn't even worth the ammo to shoot them. I've tried a couple of the DLC's and they're fun.
For how cheap it is now? Totally worth it.
E: @Arc, the boss was supposed to be hard? Then again I just took my time spamming transfusion grenades with my Grenadier-skilled soldier, then blasting it with whatever I had in my inventory that was worth shooting. Knoxx's armory is my favorite DLC by far.
Jagos

Crawmerax? On Playthrough 2? At level 61? (Thus making him 64 or 65 I think) (This was before the free level boost. haven't gotten to level 69 and tried, but considering the scaling he would probably he harder)
'Cause he can kill my tank-spec'ed Berserker rather easily (and I'm too lazy to get the proper guns to deal with him).

My problem with Space Marine was less that the controls had issues and more that there was no depth whatsoever.
Chainsword melee combos, copied directly from the Command List in the demo:
1) Right-click.
2) Right-click, right-click.
3) Right-click, right-click, right-click.
4) Right-click, right-click, right-click, right-click.
You can also add F to the end of any of these for a stun attack.
The combat knife, power axe and thunderhammer combo lists are IDENTICAL.
That is how deep this game is.

Yeah, go ahead and get it. Be warned that post-release support for it has been on the crappy side, overpriced DLC that's pretty much on the meh side. Some people may think Civ4: Beyond the Sword is better, and it is in some regards, but Civ 5 still does a lot of things right, and if you never played a civ game before it should not matter much.

Played around with Puzzle Pirates a bit. Some of the games are pretty fun, but carpentry can go die in a fire.
I dunno if free players can make pirate crews, but if they can, the NPF totally needs to form a mighty band of pirates to sail the seas and make carpentry minigames die in a fire.
Also, is anyone going to be online this evening for some gaming? L4D, TF2, Champions, Spiral Knights or otherwise?

As for Puzzle Pirates, they basically changed their F2P system into a Badge system, with certain badges giving you abilities. These badges cost Doubloons, which are either bought or very expensive via in-game currency. All badges last one month or so. However, all is not lost, as I have mused while slowly levelling my pirate.
a) It costs 20 Doubloons for a Captain badge, allowing one of us to make a crew, recruit people, set options, etc etc.
b) A Sloop, the smallest ship that houses I think 7 people, has a 20 Doubloon fee.
Rum and cannonballs, the two key items for pillaging successfully aside from manpower, don't have doubloon costs. So we would just have to get past that initial huge cost and we should be all right. If I am right, and they haven't patched since then, Captains used to be able to set permissions for who could control the ship. The Captain could buy the Sloop and make it so any Pirate rank crew could control it, and everyone could just buy Pirate Badges (1 doubloon for a month).
Anyway, I think that rant is enough, but that puts a target on 40 Doubloons. I currently have 6, and I have a friend with 10. What we really need are bodies to fill a potential Sloop!
Also carpentry can indeed die in a fire. Gunning too.
Probably worth noting again, I am playing on Malachite Ocean, and any organization would require the same ocean...Steam appears to have a weird bug that auto-logs you into a random Ocean. You have to get to the 'Ye' screen, log out, and THEN select your Ocean. It's weird, but they just went on Steam so probably will get patched eventually.

Have any of the killing floor players here been on any of those custom servers that have a higher player capacity? It's a shitstorm to the point of being near unbeatable, but it's really fun.
Only thing that would keep me from playing this all the time is that it holds a separate perk progress from the official servers, so you have to level up again from scratch on these servers.

Roommate's torrents were causing the ISP to throttle me and specifically only me for some Internet-y reason. I didn't know at the time and in frustration uninstalled Steam to see if reinstalls would help. Caught me in an infinite update loop until I discovered the torrents.
Now I have an ungodly number of hours of file verification ahead of me. Beats re-downloading them even at my now blazing speeds, but still. Shucks.
So, how about that Rusty Hearts? It's only distributed by PW Inc. and not actually developed by them so I'm intrigued

I'm trying it out right now, but I've only had about 10 minutes of play time so far (fuck you, college). The system looks cool and the gothic style is . . . interesting.
And you only get 10 MB of patching when you first start it (I swear, other MMO's make you download a full gig of patches before starting).
I'll put more of an opinion in later when I do something that's not in the tutorial.

I watched the trailer for Rusty Hearts on Steam. Gameplay looks a little DMCish, which is interesting, but the female protagonist's design annoys me. Her combat style looks cool and all, but seriously, it's like her sole purpose is to see how many times per second she can show off her underwear. So yeah. The trailer killed this game for me. Cutscene animation looked interesting, combat looked okay, but the girl character is lame.

Sanctum just had a huge update, lots of content added. I haven't tried it all but I'll touch on some of it.
New Tower, I forget what the fuck its called. It's essentially an anti-air that fires slowfields, probably great if you need more time to unleash hell on spore pods or other airbornes.
New weapon, Rex. It's a rocket launcher with an ammo system like the sniper rifle, only much more powerful, a max clip of six and excellent for simply unloading on crowds (also doubles as a viable tactic against spore pods if you use the lock-on alternate fire). Very fun to use, meaning my poor shotgun will have to go back in the closet.
New survival modes.
Bounty: You have time limits on your build phases and get resources from enemy kills. Haven't tried it yet but it sounds hard.
Pre-built: You get a bunch of preset structures you can't remove. Sounds like a way to kill the monotony (especially if you're sick of using the same maze on Bridge) and experiment with new maze configurations. Haven't tried this one yet either.
Stamina: You get shitloads of resources (I mean absolute shitloads of it) at the start of the match, but that is the only time you get resources. Allows you to quickly test out max-level configurations and see how well certain towers perform at level 6. This allowed me to test the idea of a straight hallway, and in that hallway would be several maxed slowfields leading to a maxed holo with a maxed penetrator behind it. It works quite well for tearing the shit out of most ground units, though I should probably test having one that fires from behind the target so that hovers get caught in it too.
I haven't really looked at anything else yet though. I am disappointed that the gatling shotgun was not added yet. I want that SO BAD.
So I encourage you to get Sanctum as part of the Indie Royale (there's a thread here with the link I think) so we can have decent-sized groups for tower-defense games on our steam nights.

"We're doing this exact thing again in one month" or "Steam Autumn Sale"
At least, that was the Seil thread I was going to make, right before I remembered in my sleep deprived state that there's a giant Steam thread.
Given the games of the past two months, does anybody even have any money or interest left to spend on sales to smaller/older titles?
I thought no, but that changed after some browsing. My wishlist at the moment:
Orcs Must Die
Shogun 2 Rise of the Samurai DLC
Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity
Fallout DLC I've missed
I'm a bit saddened they opted out of that "buy 6-12 copies of this one game!" thing this year. I rather enjoyed that. Though I think I was a minority. If it had been successful, they would have done it again, I guess.

Worst part: There is clearly going to be a goddamn Christmas sale next month too, or at least I'll be surprised if there isn't.

As mentioned in the public announcement thread, my gamin' PC has contracted a wicked case of the fake antivirus malware infestation, which according to my sister probably came from DeviantArt. Because of this unfortunate turn of events, I will most likely be missing Steam nights for at least a week. Hopefully they won't have to wipe the hard drive, in which case I may not be able to play any of my games for at least the next decade due to shitty internet having to redownload everything.
I am incredibly displeased.
Also suffering from withdrawal already.

So I bought Sins of a Solar Empire during the Steam sale. Booted it up today and played the tutorials. "Ok," I thought, "seems simple enough. Let's try an actual game against an AI." So I struggle my way through the first couple minutes of the game, making nooby choices with my tech tree, probably expanding ridiculously late, spending an excessive amount of time reading tech tree descriptions, and then all of a sudden pirates attack me, with a fleet five times the size of my own and I'm left defenseless as they go to town on my tiny, fragile empire.
My second game seems to be going much better, mainly because I have repelled two pirate attacks without losing my entire fleet. But god damn does this game have a learning curve. I can just tell late game is going to require so much macro control it will probably make my head spin when I get there. And I'm only on a small 1v1 map. I don't even want to think about the massive maps.
Still, the game is pretty fun despite the sheer amount of information you need to learn to be decent at the game.

Somewhere near the diplomacy tab is a bounty page, the pirates are attacking you because there's a higher bounty on your ships than the enemy.
Early game it's sometimes worth it to throw down economically to get the pirates going after some other fucker.

Yeah I figured that out during my second game. Speaking of which, I just spent 3 hours playing against a single AI on a small randomized map. I'm not sure I want to move to bigger maps O.o

I tended to just play until I was satisfied victory was inevitable.
Also, for the pirates try to time your bidding with the very end of the time limit. When I played the AI had a slight delay in bidding back, so as long as they haven't patched that you can ninja it out from under them pretty easily.

Also grabbed Sins of a Solar myself. I tried a "quick" game with a friend, looks very very nifty. But epic, and perhaps unwieldy at large scale for a relaxed, low-APM player like myself.
Capital ships though. Sooooooo fun.

you know you're fully capable of making an event.
however, many people are busy this is either final week or dead week so don't be surprised that not all of us can show up.
Finals week for me, but I just have one in Math. (Which would make or break my mark, but whatever, it's on Thursday.)
This is my last nice, stress free night (http://www.youtuberepeat.com/watch/?v=eDNuX8iR1xk) afore mad panic sets in, so... yeah, no one's on.

Ryong had an event set at 9pm EST and about 5 of us showed up, played TF2 for around 30 minutes, and then kind of left. But yeah finals be happening so the next week(s) will be a little slow. Things might pick up around the holidays so long as everyone doesn't become super busy visiting family.
Thanks a lot, Ryong. I was all ready to come and complain here 'cause no one was on on my first weekend off from school and I was ready to come a hootin' and a hollerin' and then I read Arcanums post and I have a whole lot of unfiltered rage to drink out.
Also, good luck on exams, fellow Forumites. I sincerely hope the best for you all.

I was being a useless piece of shit all day and running around with a knife and grenades as Demoman.
Then I sniped an invisible Patriarch to death with a grenade launcher though so everything was fine.
We should do it again tomorrow.

I have a copy of Sanctum left over from a 4 pack I split amongst myself and two buddies. I was wondering if any of you had something you might want to trade it for?
I also have a copy of Breath of Death VII/Cthulhu Saves the World that I bought as a gift for a friend, but due to circumstances of timing he already owns it and I am now with it sitting in my inventory.
Any interested parties can PM me if you want.
Please, no items. I really don't play TF2 enough.

A suggestion to the people with Gmod, since I know quite a few of you bought it over the recent sale.
We should play Trouble in Terrorist Town, it is really fun with a bunch of friends. It is essentially mafia in real time and we have guns all the damn time. A small number of people, depending on how many players, are traitors and everyone else has to find out who. It actually can range from fun shenanigans trying to see who looks the most "evil" to flat out "last part of every slasher horror movie" tense as hell when there are only a few people left.

To elaborate, me, Ramary and one other guy are standing in a courtyard. There's one other player our there our group hasn't run into yet. As far as we knew everyone else was dead.
The round before I'd threatened to shoot Ramary for pretty much no reason. As it turned out if I had I would have won because he totally was the traitor. So this round I decide I may as well go with my gut and shoot him in the face.
He was innocent.
So the third guy goes over to inspect Ramary's corpse/grab his guns, and I figure that not only is he statistically likely to be the traitor, but even if he isn't all I have to do is shoot the other guy and I'm set.
The third guy was totally the traitor, and thus I had saved the day with minimal casualties.

Thank you Karesh for reminding me to explain karma.
Within the game, between the rounds you have a karma score that starts at 1000. If you kill someone that is innocent your karma drops. This makes your weapons deal less damage and people will just outright trust you less. If the 3rd guy in karesh's example was also innocent, he would of had gimped weapons to fight the last guy who was the actual traitor, who always has an advantage one on one in combat.
And I do not blame karesh for shooting me, both times I was the traitor, I basically reaped souls left and right, and in one game he was my first target. He died for trusting me when I had a light machine gun.

I think my favorite was when me, the traitor and a third innocent were all locked in a room as the timer clicked down and suddenly the Traitor shoots the third guy. I screw up switching weapons and end up running around the room screaming as I swing away with my Crowbar.
Eventually I got shot, and it's immediately afterward that Ramary busts in and shoots him.

Cause... it's Left 4 Dead in a Heist, the possibilities for hilarity are right up there... and it's 9,99
Arcanum
12-21-2011, 08:10 PM
Karesh, Ramary, and I all bought Payday, and it's pretty fun. We managed to successfully complete one heist, while another brutally murdered us. And then Karesh and I finished a third map after Ramary left, but at the cost of me being left behind in police custody. If any of you want to pick it up so we can have a full team of four, that would be great since having four real players is where the game is at its peak since you don't have to worry about herding the AI about.
Some things against the game though; the cops have pinpoint accuracy, there are occasional "monster closet" areas where swat keep coming from a swat van like it's a clown car, and the civilians tend to run around during firefights in the middle of the crossfire.
